Twice, now, in as many weeks!

Tungsten T (OS 5).
The drift is almost 3/8 of an inch to the left of where I tap the screen.

Saw something about this a few months back - didn't have the problem then,
now I do.

Is there a patch to the OS?

TIA!

This is a known (but, last I checked, not acknowledged by Palm) hardware
bug in the TT.

Somebody else mentioned "Digifix". It's a great program. It won't fix
the problem, but if you have some kind of quick-launch program like
McPhling, you can easily pop it up and recalibrate.

(*sigh*) Mine drifts up to that much frequently -- often several times a day.
AND, just wait. Once I calibrate it, it then will drift again so that in about
10 minutes of playing a game, I have to pause and recalibrate it.

I love my TT, but definitely need to get this fixed. I just don't know how.

I had to take apart my Vx with a hairdryer to fix the digitizer! I am about
to do the same with my TT which has the digitizer problem.
1. How long does it take.
2. Was any part of it very difficult (as distinct from fiddly).

You won't need the hair dryer!! No I had no difficulty, I just followed the
instructions. An extra pair of hands is useful to simultaneously press the
clips on the slider mechanism and pull the two pieces apart. The cables and
connectors are quite delicate. The connectors looked clean, I think it was
just the reseating that fixed the problem. As well as the tiny screwdriver
I also found some needle-nose pliers useful for disconnecting/connecting
the battery cable. My TT's digitiser was drifting daily before I did this
about 3 months ago, it hasn't reocurred since. Take it slowly, I'm sure
you'll have no problem.

Sorry I missed the first question, the whole process took no longer than
half an hour.

Brett,

Is the "Connector" you speak off the same one shown in: "Step 4 - Now you
will slide the panel down a little further until you see the cable. Pull
the cable up from the connector."
-OR-
"Step 7 - On the otherside of the unit is a silver metal plate that the
screws go into (refer to next Step. This picture shows the silver metal
plate on the front of the unit that the screws went into. You will now
remove the battery. The small connector that is located in the middle of
the unit. Just pull the connector up."?

I'd hate to take it apart and get jammed-up on the wrong connector.

JayHawker
PS: What exactly does cleaning & re-seating the connector do?

I don't know for sure but I suspect the cable and connectors that cause
the problem is the one referred to in Step 10, connecting the m/b to the
screen. Someone in one of the groups made the conjecture that the action
of normal slider operation causes the connectors to loosen resulting in
the drift problem. I'm not sure if this was ever confirmed. There are
two ribbon cables and consequently four connectors (not counting the
battery one). All I did was pull the thing apart completely and make
sure that all those ribbon cable connectors, both male and female sides,
were clean and securely plugged in. This seemed to do the trick.
Hope this helps.

I started to take it apart but I got stuck. At the part where you press on
the two levers with the paper clips, I can't get it to move. The left hand
hole no problem, but the right side seems stuck. I've tried loads of times,
looked really carefully in the light, tried with two pairs of hands etc etc
but no joy.
Is there a trick to this? What am I doing wrong?

When you push the clip through the hole it should feel slightly "springy"
as you press on the little catch. Try pressing at different angles you may
be missing the catch. Keep gently pulling the slider apart as you press.
Perhaps the right side catch is already depressed. I recall that I did have
to fiddle a bit with one of the catches, I got someone to pull on the
slider while I worked on the catches.

I just did this procedure yesterday and it didn't take me more than
30-40 minutes. One thing you should make note of, though, is to take
out the SD memory card if you have one in the unit. I had a heck of a
time taking it apart until I realized that the card was keeping me
from easily taking it in half. Just take your time, make sure you
don't lose any of the tiny screws and you should be fine.

Thanks for your help. I took it apart and put it back together successfully.
The problem related to a tiny piece of plastic which had fallen out of place
and was jamming it.
Doh! It didn't occur to me that when I disconnected the battery it would
hard reset the machine. I did have a backup, but it is a real hassle
getting everything exactly like it was before.
Time will tell if it works.

In our last episode, the evil Dr. Lacto had captured our hero,

I have very recently switched my entire PalmPilot strategy. I keep the
TT for games, GPS software, and other high-CPU or high-graphics programs
that work better under OS5.

I acquired (from a buddy) an M515 which I use for PictureLogic and my
actual addresses and dates and memos. I'd forgotten just how much
productivity I lost when I had to give up my hacks.

Between the problems I've had with the TT and OS5, and the bad things I
keep hearing about the T-T3, I don't think I'll ever buy another Palm
except M515s.

Take it apart following the instructions on www.handshightech.com. Pull out
the connectors to the two big ribbon cables and put them back in. That will
fix it. I did it last week and my TT is fixed.
It does not take big technical skill, if you can change an electrical plug
you can do it.

I complete the disassembly and cleaned all contacts and reassembled and it
fixed the drift problem for now. And it was easy to do. I recommend doing
the repair.

I just did this tonight, and I guess only time will tell. However, I
did notice that the slider is significantly looser than it used to be,
any ideas on what I might do to tighten it up, or what I might have
done wrong?

Thanks!

The same with mine after the repair. Yet I'll live with it as long as the
drift doesn't return.
