Hiding quote level lines in 5.1?

I've been using Eudora Light since 1995, prefering it's simplicity over
incompatible features in other mail clients. But now, as my mailboxes has
grown large enough (5+ MB), I have lost trust in 3.0.6. It has become
unstable.

So I decided to finally upgrade. Last time I did this, there was a horrible
bug in the text editor, making the CTRL + <arrow> stepping useless, and I
also didn't like the quote level lines. In 5.1, it appears that the CTRL +
<arrow> bug has been fixed, but I still can't get rid of these quote level
lines. Is there a way to remove them to get a straigt and clean text
editor?

I just asked that question in this very newgroup, and got it all
explained to me by Adam Kippes and Daniel Jacobson. Now I guess it is
my time to pass on this esoteric knowledge to new adepts.

The quote level lines are called "excerpt bars" by Qualcomm. This is a
clever ploy invented by Qualcomm to prevent users like you and me from
finding the relevant bits when looking it up in their docs. They are
part of some new-fangled scheme that Qualcomm like to be known as
"flowed format" (personally, I think "flawed format" is more
appropiate).

If you are interested, you can read Randell Gellens argument for this
particular piece of braindamage here:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2646.txt
http://wso.williams.edu/listserv/eudora-mac/Feb199-Mar199/msg00018.html

As we both know, it doesn't work, and is annoying as h*ll.

It hadn't been difficult to get it right. I write this article in
Emacs, which permits quoted text to flow while at the same time
retaining the quote charcter(s) firmly in place _without_ making the
editor behave as it is beyond the user's control.

But Qualcomm got it wrong, so let's just get rid of it. Here's how:

Method 1:

Copy the following URIs and paste them into in an outgoing message
in Eudora:

<x-Eudora-option:AlwaysExcerptResponse=0>
<x-Eudora-option:ConvertFormatFlowedtoExcerpt=0>
<x-Eudora-option:InterpretFormatFlowed=0>

hold down ALT and click on each of the URIs. You are now shown a
dialogue box. Make sure the flag is set the way yout want it, and
click OK to change the flags:

Method 2:

Exit Eudora. Locate the active EUDORA.INI file on your hard disc, and
stick use a text editor to stick the following three lines in the
[Settings] section.

AlwaysExcerptResponse=0
ConvertFormatFlowedtoExcerpt=0
InterpretFormatFlowed=0

Save and restart Eudora.

The two methods are equivalent. As you probably notice, the three
flags referred in both methods are the same and the effect of
executing method 1 is to change the contents of your EUDORA.INI file.
Personally, I prefer the first method because you don't have to
rummage the file system to locate the correct EDUDORA.INI file to
hack, but YMMV.

Finally, some say that it is unneccessary to change all three flags.
The first flag (AlwaysExcerptResponse) is a necessity; the other two
are subject to some debate. You can experiment or just use all three.
I use all three.

Maybe now is the time to give all the x options that I know.
You don't need to actually send them to yourself in an email, just
paste the list into a new email and read it from the outbox (or any
other folder you care to move it to).

Whoa, back up here! It's not Qualcomm, it's in some RFC somewhere, I'm
sure. In short, you're going to be seeing it all over.

Sorry to add to your misery. <g>

There are Eudora plugins that can remove the extra quote markers.

Try:
EUDORA PLUGINS & ADD-INS PAGE
http://eudora.interweb.be/_plugins.html

Plugins ==> Remove Quotes

If you then use the Qualcomm Unwrap Text plugin after that by
highlighting all text... works like a charm.

You did it very well. Thanks a lot. I'll hopefully not be the only one to
appreciate it.

One more thing, in case you know: When I cut and pasted these INI-settings
into Eudora, I noticed that the style (10pt, MS Sans Serif) from my
newsreader was included. This is another annoyance that I've noticed in
late Windows programs. Why cut and paste style!? Is there a way to get
Eudora behaving like a plain text editor? Plain text is the only thing I
send, so it has no WYSIWYG value to see pasted text in their original
style.

Maybe. Not all RFCs end up as standard practices.

Anyway, the document in question is RFC 2646:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2646.txt
It is edited by one "R. Gellens", so I think Qualcomm will have
a hard time coming up with an alibi for this one.

> Sorry to add to your misery. <g>

To be fair, the "flowed" format as described in the RFC above is not
so bad. It doesn't munge messages on-the wire, so as a transmission
format, it can be described as "mostly harmless".

What stinks to high heaven is the way the "excerpt bars" is
_implemented_ in the Eudora message editor and (to a lesser extent) in
the Eudora 5.x message viewer and pre-viewer. Getting rid of that
mis-behaviour is what has been discussed (and resolved) on this
newsgroup recently.

Ah, you are indeed on the true path towards enlightenment.

I had a real hard time doing that, as Eudora seemed reluctant
to respond to my configuration changes at first. I fiddled
around a lot to achieve this, but here is what I believe I
did:

Go to Tools->Options:

In: Composing mail:
- Turn off word-wrap
- Turn off tabs in body of message
In: Fonts:
- Set Fixed width font so a monospace font (e.g. Corier)
- Untick "Use proprtional font by default"
- Set Printer font to a fixed width font
In: Styled text (this is the big'un):
- Tick "Show formatting toolbar" (otherwise you loose the
incredibly useful "Clear formatting" widget)
- Select "Send plain text only"
- Tick "Ask me each time" (even with "Send plain text only"
selected, Eudora sometimes seems to think it a good idea
to use styled text), but with this ticked, she will at least
ask first).
- Unick "Send signature with styles".

I _think_ that is all. To get changes to take effect and stick, it
occotionally looked like I had to quit Eudora after clicking "OK" in
the configuration dialogue box, and then restart the program -- but
maybe it was just me fiddling with the wrong controls.

Good luck!

Yes, and if Eudora asks, it means some styled text or HTML got
in the message somehow. So, if Eudora asks...
1. Do not send the message
2. Highlight all the text
3. Select the removed formatting button.
4. Then try to send again. Since the message has changed if there
is still some styled text or HTML in there somewhere. Eudora will
warn you again. Repeat steps 1 thru 3 until you do not get the
warning. Then you can pretty much be assured that your are
sending plain text only.

Now if they would have just saved the outgoing message in the same
format everything would be fine, but that will be HTML. :-(
Sent message is plain text, saved message is HTML. Go Figure.
I reported this numerous times way back in the 4.x betas to no avail.
My major complaint with Eudora 4.x+ versions. Someone please clue me
in if this ever gets fixed.
