Look here for the program/folder in question. If listed, double click the
entry and put the full path name in quotes. If this is not the case: Go to
Start/Run/control folders/View/Uncheck Restore previous folder windows at
logon. Create Separate Processes for the Desktop and Explorer
Separate Process for the Desktop and Explorer (Line 62)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to
this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
In the right pane, verify that nothing is listed under Data for load. And
also here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Second Checkpoint: Go to Start/Run and type in: msinfo32
From there navigate to Software Environment, Startup Programs. The Command
column will show you the exact command line used. You are looking for a
listing that uses a long file name/path with spaces in it, that is not
enclosed in quotes. If found that is the culprit. Do the same in
Start/Run/msconfig/Startup.
Third Checkpoint
Boot into Safe Mode (Start/Run/msconfig/Boot.ini/SafeBoot). If the folder
in question doesn't appear go to Start/Run/msconfig/Startup and remove all
of the checks. Then go to the Services Tab and check off Hide All Microsoft
Services, then uncheck what is listed. Reboot. If the folder does not
appear upon boot, re-enable each program at a time until the issue
reappears. At this point you should find the culprit.
Option: Create Start Up List or Start Up Log (Line 98)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Or... AutoRuns - Shows what
programs are configured to run during system boot up or login. Includes
items in startup folders, Win.ini, and 14 registry keys.

I really thought I's cracked it when I found this in the registry:
C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\Media Sniffer\MtdAcq.exe /s
But the folder still appeared and when I put quotes in, they were gone
after a reboot.
However, I also found this line, which looks odd to me:
NvCplDaemon rundll32.exe "c:\windows\system32\nvcpl.dll,nvstartup" All
Users HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Any ideas on either of these two points?

Since you didn't post in the original thread I don't know what has gone

Where did you put the quotes?
"C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\Media Sniffer\MtdAcq.exe" /s

I put the quotes as you listed.
However, since then, more playing with msconfig, and the registry
solved the problem. All thanks to Jay's checklist. However, it was
late and a bit of a blur and I'm not sure what actually did it. What I
do know is that it wasn't the entry above causing the problem, so the
disappearing quotes thing is still a mystery.
What did it was trial and error disabling various startup items in
msconfig until the system32 folder went away - at which point, the
offending entry just disappeared never to return.
Weird.
Thanks everyone.
