how does a mamiya leaf shutter work

I just bought a Mamiya 645 1000s a few months ago, and I have an 80mm lens.
I'd like to purchase a leaf shutter lens for the outdoor fill flash
capabilities it offers, i.e. higher speed sync.

I'm curious though how one works... I see pictures where there is a cable
connected to the lens. Is this a shutter release cable? If so, is it
simply a standard shutter release cable or something more specific? If it
isn't a shutter release cable... then what is it?

Also, I've been looking at buying a power drive for it, do I need a special
cable to go from the power drive to the leaf shutter lens, for it to
automatically cock the shutter? Or is it something direct between the driver
and the lens?

If anyone could explain exactly how one (leaf shutter lens) connects and
operates, I'd be much obliged.

thank you
Doug

Doug,

The cable you see connected to the leaf shutter lens should be a
simple standard shutter release cable.

To the best of my knowledge, regardless of whether you use a power
drive for your 1000s or not, you will have to manually cock the
shutter on the leaf shutter lens. Leaf shutter lens and Power drive
are not compatible with each other (IMHO).

Generally, when I use my 70mm leaf sghutter lens I first set the the
shutter speed on my 1000s to 1/8 th of a second, and then proceed to
use my leaf shutter lens (manually !!).

Hope this clarifies a few points for you.

Alex,

Can you explain to me how it works when you release the shutter on the leaf
shutter lens - in a little more detail?

Is there a way to lock the mirror and focal plane shutter open, on the 1000s
camera body? Then just rely on the leaf shutter to do all the work? Or as
you seem to be describing - do both the focal plane shutter on the camera
body, and the leaf shutter on the lens, release every time, and you just
make sure the focal plane stays open longer?

The latter of the two does not make sense to me, because I wonder how you
would get the high speed sync, if the focal plane shutter is still involved
in there? Is that because the focal plane still stays at or below x-sync?

One last thing... if the power drive doesn't fully work with the leaf
shutter lenses, and I plan to rely heavily on leaf shutter... then there's
really no point in buying a power drive is there?

Thanks
Doug

Also, I believe I read someplace that the
metered prisms don't work with the leaf shutter
lens.... which makes sense.
