I can see the Samba server when browsing the workgroup but as soon as I
double-click on it to see the shares, explorer freezes. If I try to do a
"net view" or a "net use" in a dos box, it freezes as well and I have to
restart Win2000 to get rid of it.

Did anybody ever encounter the same problem?

Hmmm... maybe this is the time to get rid of the problem... Try replacing
the win2k boxes with LINUX and the problem should go away.

Yes, or replacing the linux machine with Win2K, that would solve the problem
as well. But I want to have the combination running.

You're right, either approach is viable. Just a thought though...
Could you provide your samba config file? Also, you might try looking
in the samba logs for more info on the problem (/var/log/samba
directory). This should show connection attempts. Lastly, you need to
make sure that passwd encryption is either on or off on both windoze &
LINUX (look up smbpasswd in the man pages and in the /usr/doc/HOWTO
directory).

My smb.conf is very primitive, as I'm still testing the whole thing:
------------------------------------
[global]
guest account = pcguest
workgroup = EMPIRE

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
read only = no
create mode = 0750
------------------------------------

I had a look at the logs and smb.log contains some errors, which I (of
course) not understand:

Although it seems that I misconfigured something, I'm still surprised that
it makes the windows explorer crash and not come up with an error message.
Is that normal behaviour when handling Samba?

Try creating another share

[tmp]
comment = Linux tmp directory
writeable = yes
browseable = yes

[homes] is a special share. Just create a mapped drive to
an home directory of an account on the Linux machine. It
requires a username and password for the connection.

Try another NIC in the W2000 machine and install it cleanly. I'm not a Linux
expert, but replacing NIC's (especially realteks) with other NIC's like 3com
solved almost every networkproblem i have been expiriencing.

Tried that, as well and again the same result. I can see the Linux machine
when browsing the workgroup but as soon as I click on it to see the shares,
explorer freezes. When I tried to map it as a network drive, same thing,
explorer freezes.

Is it very probable that it's the NIC? I mean, FTP, telnet and HTTP works
perfectly...
