Hi all - there is an ISP in my town that currently offers 2Mbit wireless but
I am unable to get service because there is a tree in the way. I talked to
the owner the other day and he said that they will soon have 900Mhz wireless
"and it don't care about trees or buildings". He said it will be the same
speed as the service they offer now and that where I live (close to the main
office) I shouldn't need an antenna outside. He said all I would need is an
antenna on my desk. Are any of you familiar with this 900Mhz wireless
internet? Any info is appreciated. Links to good sites to read up on would
be great too.
Thanks!
TJ

There's good news and bad news regarding 900 MHz -
The good news: 900 MHz is less susceptable to losses caused by trees
and other obstructions. It may provide more reliable service than 2.4 GHz
if only one single tree is in the way.
The bad news: The ISP owner may be quoting advertising claims quoted
to him by a manufacturer of 900 MHz wireless equipment. Typically, the
sales people representing most manufacturers of "near line-of-sight" or
"non-line-of-sight" wireless equipment mis-represent the capabilities
of the equipment. The biggest error is one of omission - they don't provide
accurate coverage distances to potential purchasers.
The statement that "it don't care about trees or buildings" is only true at
very short distances from the ISP access point. If you are really located
very close to their access point (say, within 1 mile) you MAY receive
reliable service. The only way to really find out is to try it for a year.
This gives the trees time to go through their "leafing out" cycle.
Let us know the results.
