Hello,

i have Windows 98 and IE 5. During reinstalling Personal Web Server 4.0 i
get the error code 0xfee670 with a registry-problem and at the end the
pwssetup said, that MS Transaction Server isn´t installed completely and i
get the error code 0x80004005.

Maybe there is somebody who is able to understand my english and can help.
Thanks for any responds

With kind regards

Hi Clem,

If you haven't found your answer yet, blow is a compilation of several posts
from the past that should help.

Hi John,

This is a big problem I ran into several weeks ago when I tried to
upgrade my MPWS2 with the Mpws4 on the win98 cd. Your description is the
result of several problems, not just one. Anyway, below is a quoted post
that details how to solve the problems. Some of the instructions aren't
perfect so just use your common sense as you go and it will work out
fine.

The basics are:
1. remove MPWS,
2. remove FP,
3. install the "library files" update,
4. install MSPWS4 from the win98 cd NOT allowing it to install
extensions,
5. install FP98 (it will install the extensions),
6. disable MSDTC

I see this problem so often on this and the PWS NG that I keep this post
as a template. It's a lot of work to go through for your fix, but it's
the only way.

Best of luck,
M

Hi Andre,

I had that problem and I tore my hair out with
it for a week. I also experienced, once I finished with the flawed
installation, MSPWS crashes having to do with a file MSVCRT.DLL. I
installed both the PWS4 on the win98 cd and the PWS4 with the NT Service
Pack (at different times, of course) and they both acted the same way.

I have it all fixed and running nicely, finally. I scoured this NG for
info, searching with: PWS, and got the info I needed. What I describe
may not be targeted, because I made a number of changes and don't know
EXACTLY which one did what trick.

One of the posts that I followed said this:

OK What has happened is that you undoubtedly have the FP PWS loaded
in your machine. What you should have is MS PWS. Now to get to this
point is going to take some doing, so if you don't understand a step
ask,ask,ask
before punching enter.

First: Do you know how to use the tools/find item in win 95/98..If you
do open Win Explorer: Tools/find/folder--> When the dialog box appears.
enter search for fpsrvwin.exe Set the search in : to Your C;/ drive.
click OK It should comeup in the blank part of the form at the bottom. Double
click on the program name and it will run fpsrvwin.exe. This will bring up the

administrate dialog box. It should tell you what PWS you running and on
what port, and the extensions installed. It may say nothing. Next
uninstall server extensions. Close the administrator, BUT REMEMBER WHERE
IT IS, you will use it a lot in the next hour. Now goto
Start/SettingsControlPanel/add/remove/--->
Check to see ifyou have a PWS installed if you do remove it. Then remove
the FP98 files. Now install the MS PWS first. Do not let it try to
install anything else first (don't let it install front page
extensions). Then install FP98, and watch the process, and you will note
that it will install the extensions for the MS PWS some place down the
line.If it doesn't.. When the installation is complete, and you have restarted
your machine. Again run fpsrvwin.exe, and install extensions, choose the right
one from the drop down menu. Then click the check and fix button and see if
anything else
is wrong. Close the administrator, You are now ready to run FP98.. Read
this carefully and if there is anything that confuses you let me know
and I will try to explain. rg

Following the basics of these instructions, I got the MSPWS4 version
from the win98 cd installed without the MTS registry error. So far, so
good.

Then the matter of PWS crashes and MSVCRT.DLL. I found that there is an
update available from the MS Windows update site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ , where they check your machine to
see what it needs or is missing. When it asks if I want it to check my
machine I said no, because I wanted to see all the updates available.
One of them is called a "library update." It performs the update
automatically and it has a new version of MSVCRT.DLL that worked
flawlessly and cured the PWS crashes. My machine had about six instances
of this file in various other directories (the update replaced the one
in the windows/system directory). I replaced the rest, after renaming
them MSVCRT.bak just in case, with the new version (6.00.8337.0,
12/7/98, 266,293 bytes).

I had one final hurdle. This MTS, Microsoft Transaction Server, puts a
file reference in the registry to automatically run this program
everytime windows starts. It's called MSDTC. And that bugger would lock
up my cd and zip drive so I couldn't eject anything without closing down
windows,
plus it slows down windows shutdown, because it wouldn't quit voluntarily. I
found instructions to disable the thing by editing the registry. The
instructions were in the PWS documentation.

After all that, voila, the PWS works beautifully. I believe it's faster
than PWS2.

Hope this helps :)

p.s. I tried finding that mtssetup.dll, too, and I couldn't find it.
Turns out I didn't need it.
