I've tried on several diffrent computers, and always got
the same result. On a machine where OS was upgraded from
Windows 98 to Win 2000 or XP setup of MSDE fails and rolls
back. I've tried with all versions of MSDE, from original
to SP3a. Does anybody knows why?
Thanking in advance
Misa

What was the error?
Please create a verbose log and let us know where it failed (search for
'value 3' then cut and past 10 lines above and below that). If it failed in
cnfgsvr.exe please provide cnfgsvr.out file.
Please also make sure File & Printer sharing services is started since this
is MSDE prerequisite.
Refer to section 3.7 of SP3ReadMe.htm for installation details.
thanks.

I've made some more research and figured that the MSDE
setup fails on computers that don't have any network
adapter.

Here is a part of failed setup log:

You probably get the message at the end of an error log
stored in the log folder within sqlserver folder that
reads something like this ...SQL Server is terminating
due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager. Is
this correct? I am having the some problem and just
posted the question to the rest of the group.
Please keep your eyes on my post (from Tom) to look for
your answer - hopefully.

I am not sure from your response if you have solved the problem. If you did
please post your fix to the newsgroup so that others encountering this same
error can have a solution on hand.

If not, a common error of below error that you got is when File & Printer
Sharing is not started. To solve this go to Services and Start Server then
try the installation again.

Starting custom action InstallSQLAgentSecurity
InstallSQLAgentSecurity failed (MISKO,LocalSystem,87).
Action ended 15:12:16: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

Please let us know. Thanks.

I think I've solved problem.
When you upgrade OS from Win 98 (maybe ME but I haven't
tried) to 2000/XP on a computer which don't have network
adapter only TCP/IP protocol is installed. Client for
Microsoft Network and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft
Networks are NOT installed. After these components are
added MSDE setup seems to work.
