Using the sample calculator project, can get it to work with Pocket PC 2002
Emulator.

Have the e740 setup with Active Sync on usb. Have 802.11b setup as part of
the local network 192.168.5.83 fixed address. Can browse the internet.

When I try to deploy project to Pocket PC device the device can not be
found. In options device, only transport is TCP connect transport and IrDA
transport, but there is not USB tranport.

In options,Startup Server is set to ActiveSync(no other options available).
Active Sync seems to work only when connected via USB on the e740.

My assumption is that it is looking for active sync connection and since
active sync is only working on usb this might be causing the problem. Should
active sync also work via wireless tcp/ip?

Also, Toshiba will only work with Active Sync 3.5.

Help!

Thanks,

John Ilgen

Are you using different versions of ActiveSync? If so, then what is the
other one?
Has it ever connected? What is the exact error?
What desktop OS are you running?
The TCP transport uses TCP/IP over USB, if that is how the device is
connected. I don't know about the Toshiba/802.11 case, but I know of
ActiveSync working on TCP/IP via a wireless connection.

I am using only one version of active sync 3.5. Toshiba says that active
sync 3.6 does not work on their e740! I can attest to that!

ActiveSync works on the USB for synchronization. Wireless works for internet
browsing. I see no way to use ActiveSync in the wireless mode.

Doing the following:

Tools, Connect to Device, (Platform - Pocket PC, Device - Pocket PC Device),
connect

Get this error message: Connection Failed - Cannot establish a connection.
Be sure the device is physically connected to the development computer.

The options are: Device Tools, Devices, (Platform - Pocket PC, Devices -
Pocket PC Device, Transport - TCP Connect Transport, Startup Server -
ActiveSync Startup Provider), Configure TCP/IP Transport Settings, Using
specific IP address - 192.168.5.83)

TCP/IP only works over the wireless as far as I can tell. I don't see how
you can run TCP/IP over USB. If one can, please enlighten.

Running Win XP.

Looking at ActiveSync on the PC - Get connected: After installing batteries
or plugging in the AC adapter, do one of the following:

1) Use the serial cable to connect to a COM port on the back of this desktop
computer and this desktop computer and click Next.

2) Use the USB cable to connect to the USB port on the back of this desktop
computer. ActiveSync will automatically detect the device connection.

You can also connect your mobile device using infrared.

--------------

Says nothing about using wireless for Using ActiveSync. Also, this dev
computer does not have IR.

Thanks for you help,

Don't know if this is your problem, but if you installed ActiveSync after
you installed 2003, it well may be. It happened to a number of people on the
group, me too, and was fixed by re-installing only the Visual Studio part of
2003. If you want to give it a shot, go Add/Remove programs, then don't
remove anything, just re-install the Visual Studio part (second item on the
installation screen)

Hello,

I have the same problem as mentioned by John.
ie., when I try to deploy .NET component in Pocket PC
device, I get an error which reads

"Error: Cannot establish a connection. Be sure the device

is physically connected to the development computer"

I use the following
Operating system : Windows 2000 Professional
Developement Environment : Visual Studio .NET 2003 Beta
PDA : Compaq iPaq H3800 Series - Pocket PC

I use Actice Aync 3.6 for synchronization and Visual
Sudio .NET 2003 Beta was installed after installing Active
Sync 3.6 (Active Sync was upgraded from version 3.5 to 3.6
and then Visual studio .NET 2003 Beta was installed). I
tried deploying the component using both USB and COM1 port
connections. (ie., using Active Sync through USB port I
first synchronized the files and tried to deploy .NET
component. It didn't work. I disconnected that and then
synchronized using Active Sync 3.6 through COM1 port and
tried to deploy .NET component). Both didn't work and I
got the same error.

In Visual Studio .NET 2003
Tools -> Options -> Device Tools -> devices
I selected
Show Devices for PC: Pocket PC
Devices : Pocket PC Device
Device Name : Pocket PC Device
Transport : TCP connect Transport
Startup Server : ActiveSync Startup Provider

I tried with specific IP address (134.68.140.231) and also
with "Obtain IP address automatically using ActiveSync"
option. For all combinations of options I tried, I get the
same error which says, "Cannot establish a connection. Be

sure the device is physically connected to the development
computer".

I couldn't proceed without getting a .NET component
deployed in my PDA. Anyone please help me out.

John, how did you solved the problem?

Thanks,
Barun.

Look for the thread
"Cannot establish a connection using VS.NET 2003"
by Jose Baldner from MS, there he talks about sending someone a fix. Maybe
you can contact him.

If you are desperate enough, try the 2003 install, don't un-install
anything, just install the Visual Studio part over the existing one, and see
what happens.

Chris,

I reinstalled ActiveSync and then used ActiveSync over the wireless
connection.

Reinstalled Visual Studio and was able to deploy to the Pocket PC.

Did notice some issues when using the emulator and then switching to the
Pocket PC. Got can not deploy. Am investigating this.

Thanks for your help,

John Ilgen

Chris,

According to Toshiba support, they do not recommend AS 3.6. I purchased my
PSA last summer so there might some issues with the unit.

Thanks for the info. If I find something that does not work with AS 3.5,
then I know I can upgrade.

There are rare instances where some software that uses the cryptography
services on the device or the desktop can mangle the keys used to prep the
device, a necessary step in connecting to a device.

Here are some things you can do to search for clues:

1. What happens if you cold-reboot your device using the little switch on
the underside? WARNING: You will lose all data on the device.
2. What happens if you create a new administrator privelege account, and
try deploying from that device?
3. When you attempt to connect, do you see a directory on the device
called \windows\netcfkeys? If you don't see any files in this directory,
something is going wrong with authentication when you try to connect, and
that would be a major clue.

I hope this helps. Let us know what you find.

Thanks!

- Internet

When you use ActiveSync you have to use "Obtain an IP address automatically
using ActiveSync". If this is not working for you then please tell me:

1) What desktop OS do you use?
2) Do you use any localized version of OS?
3) If your computer name or your user name contains any non-English
characters? Yes: Change the machine name and the user name in order to have
only English characters.
4) Do you have administrator rights on that machine? Yes: you must have
administrator rights.
5) Did you upgrade the ActiveSync? Yes: you need to fix your registry.
6) What device do you have? If is an WinCE 4 device than you have to
download and install "Windows CE Utilities for Visual Studio .NET 2003"
from http://smartdevices.microsoftdev.com/Downloads/default.aspx
and use the tool to specify the CPU flavor that you use.

I have the exact same situation.

I've uninstalled async and vs.net 2003, restarted, reinstalled async then
vs.net,
hard reset the device,
applied the ConnectionManager "fix",
using both a Tosh e740 and an Intermec 760C, same result on both,
tried from a different user account on this system, same result

deploy works fine from other development systems.
deploy works on this one from EVC
ASync explorer works.
NetCFKeys do show up on device.

Can anyone help?
