I *mistakenly* bought a copy of turbotax 2002 today. I decided it
was time to do my taxes and have used turbotax for at least 5 years
now. Much to my dismay I have found I basic bought a privacy invading
bunch of virusware.

1) this new software started off by *spamming* my desktop with a bunch
of worthless ad links. I *PAID* money for this crap ? This isn't some
free software that survives by ads.

2) they decided they would add product activation (ala windows XP) which
is at best annoying at worst will keep you from trying to move it to
another computer you own if you need too.

3) They loaded some virusware called c_dila which they use for some reason
but is *always* running for *no good reason* sucking up your computers
memory and cpu resources. I saw some unknown processed and tried to kill this
crap and it renamed it's own executable and came back. You can tell this virusware
is running by looking in task manager and looking for a process called CDACxxxx.exe
where the xxxx is varied by the virusware.

I would highly recommend *NOT* buying or using this software at this point as
I have no confidence that it is not going to screw up my computer and they
are loading what is basicly a virus on your computer. I will be making
sure none of my friends and family make this mistake.

also after all this I think I bought a worthless product because the IRS now has free online
filing it looks like :

If you are opposed to the product activation technology used in
TurboTax 2002 you can use Intuit's 60-day money back guarantee to send
an important message to Intuit. In addition to the free on-line tax
services, there are other excellent tax preparation programs for your
PC, such as H&R Block's TaxCut, available in stores or at
www.taxcut.com and TaxAct, available at www.taxact.com.

About that free filing, seems like it covers everyone and his brother
*EXCEPT* Those of us with AGI between 40k-50k. What really pisses me
off is that if my husband and I filed separately we could both get free
filing (under 25K). But for married filing jointly, they don't consider
under 50K to be worth the same break.

Be forewarned that if you want to use the TaxAct software for e-filing,
then you MUST have IE 5.0 installed on your PC. Of course they do not
tell you this until you have entered all your data, entered your credit
card number, etc., and try to submit the completed data. This is what
happened to me and now I wouldn't use TaxAct again on a bet!

Interesting info. I did not know this. Unless I am mistaken, TT
requires IE 5.5 to be installed just to work, and I think that TaxCut
may also require IE. Is there any tax program that does not require
IE?

TaxAct? The cheap and cheezy program that's mostly free? That's news to
me. I'm going to double check my license.

I suspect even the professional programs require IE also. :(

Found it on their website. The program doesn't require you to *use* IE, but
requires you to *have* IE.
