In searching for the solution I read elsewhere about
Mswheel.exe program . I searched for it. It does not
exist on my pc. The install process must be leaving it
out for some reason. I have selected Exp 3 each time.
I am going to try using different choice to see if it
fixes or changes problem.
I am installing on PS2 port. I also noted in one of
files called setup notes or somesuch, that serial
intellipoint explorer 3 not in a list where I would expect
it, but does show up under usb list of similar devices??
Don't know if that is a connection or not.
I tested mouse on friends pc with older version and it
works there. Chuck
AFAIK, MSWheel.exe is not an IP4.01 component. I think you can safety discount the need for that file.

I just attempted re-install as different device with same
results. THEN I shut down and connected mouse to USB
port and tried again. Had to reconnect olde mouse to PS2
port first. EXPLORER 3 now working almost instantaneously
on USB port. All buttons and the wheel.
And, you were right, the mswheel program is still not on
the pc. so it must not be needed.
Something though is getting in way of installing on ps2
port. The original mouse was IBM and has a TrackPoint
between the two clickers which allowed scrolling in all
directions. That no longer works as its software was
uninstalled during first install of Intellipointer
software.
I would still prefer to go back to the ps2 port, but
cannot figure what is preventing that....obviously
something is preventing the device from being recognized
properly so that appropriate software gets installed.
Any thoughts, anyone?

I see y7our setup issue is resolved one way or another, but one tip to keep
in mind installing ANY software--ANTI-VIRUS. Anti Virus can keep any
program from properly installing, so it can be a good idea to disable it
before installing any program in the future.
As for you current issue, what kind of computer are you using, and what was
the previous mouse driver? Any special mouse or keyboard drivers (or
writing tablets/touch pads).

You make a good point about the virus program, should have
thought of that.
