My 1600SW seems to have a slight downward tilt
on the right side. I'm not entirely sure if this
is real, or an illusion created by the off-center
stand.

Anyone else see this?

(To make the orientation explicit, while
facing the monitor, the corner with the
Silicon Graphics logo seems a tad lower
than the side closer to the power button.)

Hi!
Never noticed it but had to check with an old fashioned
folding rule. ;-) The right corner was indeed 5 mm lower than the
left. No big deal, IMHO.
Cheers

Same here matey, maybe could do with some more ballast in the port
bilges, just make sure you don't go to sea in it!

Cheers

Dang it. I always thought it was an optical illusion. Measuring
with a high precision device (metal ruler) reveals right side
is .75 cm. lower than left side. Maybe it's the cube logo that's
causing the starboard list?

Just fixed it with a small stack of post-it notes under the right
side of the base. Measurement reveals it's level, but now everything
looks like it's listing to port!

The reason for the "tilt" or "sag" is that the hinge behind the screen
where the screen mounts to the base isn't located at the fulcrum or
center of gravity. The whole screen is in fact a bit heavier on the
right side, thus causing the tilt. All 1600SW screens tilt a certain
amount, some more than others. Unfortunately, there's no elegant
solution for this.

Well, except my personal non-standard "solution" [note: *not* supported
by SGI!] which (as I've written here before) is to remove the 1600SW
from it's pedestal completely (as documented in the manual) and to clamp
the little mounting tab in a small desktop vise, one of the ones with
a universal joint which can provide whatever angle or tilt you want.

Of course, that only works if you're trying for the "super-laptop" style,
with the bottom of the display resting just behind the keyboard, tilted
back about 30 degress from vertical (which is how I have mine mounted
at work)...
