Can someone really familiar with direct x functions please read over this
post carefully and explain what's happening on my system? I'd really
appreciate it if I could understand what's happening a bit better.
I have XP Home Edition and have upgraded directx to 9.0a. There are
absolutely no problems at all with my graphics. I have a PNY GeForce4 64 meg
Ti4200 and I'm using the latest drivers for that card, which are WHQL
certified. (Nvidia 40.72 detonator reference drivers)
My question concerns the tests you do in dxdiag for display. First of all,
I'm bringing up dxdiag by using search dxdiag. Is that the correct way to
bring up the direct x screen for doing the tests?
Once there, I find dxdiag in my system 32 and SP1 locations. There are
several dxdiag icons visible. I double click the sys 32 icon and the direct
x screen comes up ok and performs a search for WHQL drivers...all ok.
Now the tests; I open "display" and the two tests are visible...direct draw,
and Direct 3D.
Direct draw The concentric rectangles are there ok. The small bouncing
white box shows normally. The next test...the full screen white bouncing
box, sometimes shows up on the dark screen and sometimes it doesn't. I would
say that most of the time it doesn't appear.
Now to Direct 3D. The hardware acceleration for 7 never shows up......number
8 and 9 show up normally as the spinning boxes.
My questions are two. First of all, is what I'm seeing ok, even if the full
screen bouncing white box is a sometimes show...and the number 7 spinning
box is always missing?.....and this also.....when the tests are completed
and I exit dxdiag back into the search window.....all the icons for dxdiag
are gone.....none are showing at all. The text is all there, but after
running the tests, the icons always disappear in the search window.
Can anyone shed any light on my general comments and help me understand this
process. I want to make sure nothing is wrong in my system.
FWIW, this behavior was present as well in directx 8.0 and 9.0 before I
upgraded to 9.0a.
Many thanks for your help.
Dudley

Good Morning Dudley,
Trust you had a good trip, tried the proceedures you outlined below and
part of what you are saying is happening here as well. First there are
many ways to run and executable file (exe). The way I normally run DXdiag
is by going to start > run and typing "dxdiag" without the quotes. This
launches it without any issue. Trying a search for dxdiag as you did does
bring up a windows full of files, with all their associated icons. Running
dxdiag.exe from C:\Windows\system32 will launch the application fine. On
return after doing the video tests many of the associated icons dissappear
as if the page is not being refreshed.(Search Results window) 61 files were
found in my case and of those only 12 have an icon. (This is a bug....will
look it up and thanks for bringing it to our attention. F5 - refresh doesn't
bring the icons back, if you research you will get them again, all files
there just associatied icons missing)
Running DXdiag always brings up the DX7 interfaces for me, along with
DX8 and DX9 if you have DX9 installed. It is very strange that you don't
see this portion. You could try running dxdiag again and try all the tests,
then saving the information at the bottom of the interface. Then post that
here, it will list all the files in your dxdiag and may give us a clue as to
why you are not seeing the DX7 interface test.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention and your detailed
explaination!
