It may be an A to mini-B cable (still haven't verified yet), but it's
most definitely not a regular A to B cable. The B connector is much
too large to fit the T|E.

The Tungsten E uses an A to mini-B USB cable. I should know, I work in
an electronics store which carries them.
Let me make it clear to this newsgroup that this USB wire is NOT
proprietary. I've read some posts in which people were saying Palm
changed the cord....what bullshit. It is standard wire people.

It does? I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere. Everything on the
Palm site that I've seen about recharging the T|E points to the AC
adapter.
Must have missed something somewhere or not read the same reviews.

I don't think it's advertised, so I doubt you missed anything. But my
Tungsten T, plugged into my TiBook all day, will fully recharge. Of
course if I'm in a hurry, it's much faster to use the T|E charger.

PS. The T|E's USB cable is a standard USB cable: don't know the proper
name: A to mini-B? Anyhow I used the USB cable that came with my Lexar
memory card reader with my T|E and had no problems syncing (or trickle
charging) the T|E.

It does. I ran my TE for 4 hours the other night while installing stuff with
*only* the sync cable plugged in. It never came off full a full %100 charge.
Course I was running it off a 500ma rated USB hub. I think a standard USB port
is only rated at 100ma so it may not charge as fast using only a laptop. But it
definitely does charge...

standard USB cable and charges through it (the latter is not well
documented). My wife's CLIE used the same 5 pin Mini-B cable, but that
CLIE used AA batteries and I suspect the cable will not charge a T|E.
I believe the standard cable will charge. These cables are used in
cameras and cell phones. There's even a chance that you could use one
cable for your TE, Cell phone, and camera!
It's a USBA/Mini B Device: USBA to Mini B 2.0. THE CATCH IS THAT IT'S
A 5 PIN MINI-B, NOT A 4 PIN MINI-B. (They should have named them
differently, they're both called MINI-B. Stupid.)

This type of connector is quite popular with digital cameras. A
froogle.com and pricescan.com search found several suppliers. You can
get 6' and 10' cables for $4 to $20 each, better known vendors
(computers4sure, etc) charge about $7 to $8.
What I REALLY want is a 3' cable that's bright orange -- so I can find
the #$!# thing amongst all my gear. I didn't find bright orange (I'll
look into coloring it myself :-), but I found some shorter cables
including one well designed for traveling.

In a prior posting [1] I described the cable used by the Tungsten E
(USB Mini-B 5 pin) and listed a few suppliers of travel cables. Since
then I've received the ZIP-LINQ retractable cable I ordered [2].
This cable appears to work quite well with the TE. It's VERY compact,
smaller than I'd imagined. I think it should be treated with some care
and delicacy, but it should make a great travel companion. Now that
I've got it, I wish I'd ordered two or three of them.
I did order two more conventional 3 foot mini-B cables [3] from the
same vendor, but the others have not yet arrived. Since I will soon
have FIVE TE sync cables I've probably got enough. I got all five for
the less than the cost of a Palm Universal sync cable. There's also
the prospect of traveling with one cable for cell phone, Palm, and
camera (though my G2 and s230 sadly use a different USB cable, I
intend that my next phone use a mini-B sync cable).
