Is anyone out there familiar with Dr. Mirkin's Radio Show, and his
theories about Prostatitis..
He thinks that Prost... and Arthritis and Sinusitus are all caused by a
combination of micoplasma, and ureoplasma and can only be cured by
prolonged (6months +) of either arithromyacin or doxycycline
antibiotics...
Any comments or theories...?

The only time I ever heard the show was while handling the traffic on
the DC beltway, so I may not have been concentrating well enough. But I
heard him saying (publicly, for everybody to hear and know) that nobody
knows how to treat the chronic fatigue syndrome, but that he does. He
treats it by prolonged treatment by doxycycline and if that does not
help, he tries to add to in ampicillin. He claims to have 20% cure rate.
Where did we hear all of that before?
Being jaded by all of these reports, I am ready to put forth a
proposition that I have a 20% chance to improve my car tune-up by
putting doxycycline twice a day under the hood. Just slamming the hood
and looking twice a day at the engine will surely do something.

Early Medical Training
Dr. Gabe Mirkin, a Boston native, graduated from Harvard University in
1957. Dr. Mirkin earned
his MD in 1961 at Baylor University College of Medicine. Dr. Mirkin did
his residency in his home
town at Massachusetts General Hospital. During this period Dr. Mirkin
was a Teaching Fellow in
Pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School.
In 1963 Dr. Mirkin received a Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in
Baltimore. At Hopkins Dr.
Mirkin studied allergy, immunology and dermatology. During this period
he was a Teaching Fellow
in Allergy and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Medical School.
Dr. Mirkin began private practice in the Washington, D.C. area in 1966.
His medical practice was
interrupted for military service, and he served in the U.S. Army during
1969 and 1970. Following
his military service Dr. Mirkin returned to private practice.
Washington, DC
In 1976 Dr. Mirkin was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department
of Physical Education at
the University of Maryland and in 1978 wrote The Sportsmedicine Book
published by Little
Brown and Company. It went on to become the best selling book on Sports
Medicine ever and has
been translated into many languages.
In 1984 Dr. Mirkin was appointed Associate Clinical Professor in the
Department of Pediatrics at
the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
Dr. Mirkin is board-certified in Allergy and Immunology, Pediatrics and
Sports Medicine. He has
been the fitness broadcaster for the CBS Radio Stations' News Service
since the mid '70s.
Publications
Dr. Mirkin has written eight books, numerous chapters in medical
textbooks, many articles for
scientific publications and is the author and publisher of "The Mirkin
Report," a monthly journal on
the latest breakthroughs in health, fitness, nutrition and sexuality.
Broadcasting
Dr. Mirkin has been doing a long form talk radio program each weekday
evening since 1979,
starting on CBS-owned WCAU, Philadelphia. In 1982 his long form nightly
talk program was
picked up by NBC owned-and-operated WRC radio in Washington, DC. WWRC
continues to
carry this program which began in national syndication in 1996 and is
now heard in cities throughout
the U.S. and Canada.
Current Medical Practice
Dr. Mirkin continues to see patients every day. His practice on
Connecticut Avenue in Kensington,
Maryland is focused on Allergy, Immunology, Dermatology, Sports Medicine
and consultations for
difficult to diagnose medical conditions.
PROSTATITIS

The most common causes of burning on urination in men are venereal
diseases caused by bacteria
called mycoplasma, chlamydia and ureaplasma.
If you are a man who has burning on urination, a feeling that you have
to urinate all the time, a sense
of urgency to urinate when your bladder is full and have to get up
frequently in the middle of the
night to urinate, you probably have a venereal disease. Your doctor can
order a urinalysis and urine
culture, but the odds are overwhelming that these tests will be normal.
Then your doctor will do a
special swab for chlamydia and gonorrhea. If the culture shows that you
are infected with these
agents, your doctor will prescribe the appropriate antibiotics, but the
bacteria grow so poorly in the
laboratory that the lab often reports that they are not there, even when
they are. You and your
sexual partner should be treated with antibiotics because mycoplasma,
chlamydia and ureaplasma
infections will not go away by themselves and can be spread to all your
sexual contacts. You and all
your sexual partners should take antibiotics, such as azithromycin 500
mg the first day and one pill a
day for the next 7 days. If that doesn't work, I prescribe once a day
for one week: 250 mg
azithromycin and levofloxacin 500 mg or sparfloxacin 200 mg.
If that doesn't cure you, you are in big trouble. Your doctor may order
a semen culture, but semen
cultures can grow germs that are not causing your symptoms, but it may
be the only clue you have.
Prostate infections can be extraordinarily difficult to cure so you may
have to be treated with
injections of very high doses of antibiotics or with antibiotic pills
for several months.

Regarding doxycycline, aren^t the whole class of tetracyclines known to
be ototoxic? Minocycline inserts lists "reduced hearing"as a side
effect, and the tetracyclines have been banned in China for causing
widespread deafness. Why is doxy still being given for long term use?

Might work. It's not as simple as that, though. It is caused, mostly by
bacteria, I believe, and many cases can be resolved by diligent work with
antibiotics, lab testing and drainage. But I don't think blanket
statements can cover the whole range of things that happen to prostatitis
