By now, Tara vs Sitara issue regarding Shalimar Studio's
singer has been mentioned ad nauseum on the forum.
Today, a knowledgeable fellow told me that his friend
had discussed the songs with Josh Malihabadi in Lahore
in the 1950s and Josh said the singer was Sitara Kanpuri.
I am 99% sure it was she but the clinching proof which
would allow the argument for Tarabai Lucknavi to be
dismissed is still proving elusive.

The latest update based on feedback by Kamalakar
Pasupuleti, Dr Manohar Lal Kapur and Gurcharan
Singh Sandhu is this :

man kaahe ghabaraaye N-26419 (both sides)
4:38 on CD
ai chaand naa itaraanaa N-26421 NEENA 8051 maroon
nagarii merii (part one) N-26421 NEENA 8050

ai chaand umiidon ko ..
.... aawaaz do insaaf ko N-26420 NEENA 8052 (maroon)
after the rape, she sings (part of) this song in the film.
This side is really part-2 of 'nagarii merii' song.

paradesii kyuuN N-26420 NEENA 8053

more jobanaa kaa N-26499
chhip chhip kar N-26499

The HMV Records mentioned above were presumably released
in 1944, the year of the film's release. The label of 78 records
is maroon colour. The name mentioned is 'NEENA' (all letters
upper-case). 8051/8052 are extra numbers mentioned on the
record's label. The voice is Sitara Kanpuri's.

The same songs (same singer, same recording) were reissued
on fresh set of 78s in 1947/48. The number of these 78s is not
known. But this time, the name 'Tara' or 'Tarabai' was mentioned
on the records. KP had seen these 78s many years ago.

A version set was reissued by a private setup, possibly around
1947. No entry is found in any catalogue by Hamraaz of these
versions. But their existence in SLBC archives has been confirmed
by Vijaylaxmi Desaram. The singer-name mentioned on the
78s is 'Neena'. (Only the first letter capital.) The voice is different
than Sitara's. The singer could be Neena. Or it could be
someone else. W Z Ahmad, the film's director and Neena's
real-life husband, has said that Neena, who was the film's heroine,
had never recorded the songs in her voice.

The quest for version recordings continues...

Great Job, Mr. Naniwadekar.

This is what you have to do to resolve the issue once for all, as to
how many recordings were made.

Irrespective of how many labels were used to market these song, but
if
there was only one singer (Sitara or Tarabai), then they were made
from the same STAMPING PLATES. These plates were made as
soon as the song was recorded on the Wax Master. Since, there is no
way to affix a label on the stamping plates, the Pre-Production
Dept - which transforms Wax master to the Stamping Plate, will
engraves a Coupling Number. This number is located between the
spiral and the
blank space to affix the paper label. This number is also sometimes
printed at the bottom of the label. For example for the

78 rpm record # N 52109 / Film: Begunah

Side A: Ae Pyase Dil Bezuban, the Coupling # is: QJE -
9849 - T

Side B: Aaja Raat Beeti Jaye, the Coupling # is: QJE -
9850 - T

The Marketing Dept decides label (doggiewal or columbia), which
two songs to pair with, assign a Serial Number (e.g.: N 52109) and
listing the Coupling Numbers, will give the order to the Production
Dept., to press the records.

Since you have located the records, getting the info. won't be very
difficult I am primarily concerned with only 1 Song:

Nagri Meri Kab Tak, Part 1 and

Part 2 (aka: Ae Chand Umeedon Ko or Awaaz Do Insaaf
Ko Insaaf Kahan Hai)

While you are already on this hunting trip, can you plaese find out
the name of the girl, whose posed as a model for the paiting, which
was used on the cover of the LP: 45 NLP 1039 Published in 1979

I can send you an image file by e-mail
