I think it's me. I always get the replay on any machine I play. Who
can prove me wrong?

Probably me, I get the replay for every threshold and high score and grand

machine in Canada.

Lloyd - Being able to accurately predict the "Match" number and then insuring
that your final score ends in those same two digits certainly makes you "the
King" in *my* book. ;-)

Nah, he doesn't actually get all that in every game, but he *believes*
he gets all that in ever game, therefore it's true.

Oh wait, wrong thread.

Good ? I would love to know and I would really love to watch 'em
play. Should learn a lot. What is the criteria? Most championships?
Most verified high scores? Beat the most machines? Plays all era pins
the best? Most consistent player. Brags the most? Rick Stetta was 5
time world champion wasn't he? But I don't know the format of the
tournament or who he beat. Is there a unified title or is this like
wrestling where you form your own league and crown yourself king? Does
anyone know? JR.

I'd say Eric Stone from Laconia, NH would be a top contender if not the
greatest pinball player I have ever witnessed. He holds a few world records
on many pinball titles from the lates 70's to the latest games. His scores
are even in Walter Day's Twin Galaxies book. I've had Eric over to my game
room a few times. It gets annoying after awhile to get beaten time after
time and title after title on games that you have played and owned for many
years and it's only the first or second time he has ever seen or played the
game. ; )

Eric has "The Gift".......

Speaking of great pinball players. At Expo2001 I watched a fellow play
pinball who appeared to be missing his left hand. The man played
absolutely magnificently. Does anyone know who I am speaking of?

That would be Glenn Wilson. He won that tournament one year, beating Noel
Steere on Monster Bash in the finals. Both Glenn and his brother Dan are
stunning players, having been on the competitive pinball scene for as long
as I can remember. Back in the day, Dan posted the following about his
brother in response to a newsgroup inquiry just like yours:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=Pine.3.87.9404271424.B6300-0100000%40LIBOFMICH.LIB.MI.US&output=gplain

For my money though, seriously, I have never ever seen a player like
Lyman. One time Lyman and Noel were at my house playing Getaway, and Noel
finished his game with 1.2B. Lyman started his third ball at around 1M
and came back to BEAT Noel with 1.5B. Noel was just shaking his head,
you're never far enough ahead of Lyman to relax.

My other favorite Lyman story is about the time he got over a billion on
an ST:TNG tht was missing its left flipper, it literally had no left
flipper at all. He just did Picard maneuvers all day long. Apparently when
the ball would fly towards the left he would nudge it into the outlane to
get the kickback.

Of course There are lots of other players out there to talk about like
Keith Elwin, Bowen Kerins, Keith Johnson, Paul Madison, Trent Augenstein,
Jim Belsito... It was interesting at pinburgh this year noticing how
pinball is in very dark days, but the competition was fiercer than ever.

Greg thanks for the link, very interesting reading. I agree that Lyman
is probably somebody you'd never want to count out of a game, and Trent
seems to have been winning a lot of stuff lately. Pinball at it's best
can nurture these really good players, but by it's nature can leave them
(and us!) cussing, kicking, tilting and generally upset at the laws of
physics, and the "wild" ball. Dave

I've had the pleasure of playing with some of the best players in
the world. I would use more than replay as a criteria for that. I think
you need to prove yourself in a tournament setting in multiple
tournaments. Using that criteria I would place the following
individuals in the Super Wizard category:

Alphabetical since I don't want to rank them:

Bowen Kierns
Dan Wilson
Dave Hegge
Glen Wilson
Jim Belsito
Keith Elwin
Keith Johnson
Lyman "shank boy" Sheats
Neil Shatz
Paul Madison
Trent Augenstein

Look at any tournament results and you will see these names. Many of them
have won PAPA, IFPA, or FLIP-OUT.

Amen to that. I was playing him on Whitewater at Rick Schieve's house
once. After my second ball, I led him something like 700 million to
about 10 million. He proceded to start whirlpool challenge on ball 2 and
rape it for something insane like 300 million. He ended ball 2 at
800 million. I came back on ball three and ended up at 1.3 billion, which he
proceeded to blow away with a 2 billion plus final score. The funny thing
was most of all the other people at Rick's stopped playing and were
watching us play and trash talk, pretty amusing.

Don has similar experiences to this on the golf course when we play against
each other, which explains his need to call me "Shank Boy" whenever he gets
the opportunity....

I definitely think my dad (Roger Sharpe) is one of the best of all time. For
his era, he truly was amazing. He has told me the story of how he played in
front of a judge in New York to legalize pinball back in the 1970's. He was
calling his shots as he hit them, calling lanes he would land in off of his
plunge. I've been in tournaments where there is a lot of pressure, but I can
only imagine the amount of pressure in trying to legalize pinball. While
writing his Pinball book he told me he played one game for 6 hours and had to
leave it to catch his flight home. He also played Walter Payton in this charity
event and had Walter Payton play three games and he played one ball and beat
him. Although my brother and I can kick his butt now (and we're not that good),
I can only imagine what it would have been like to play him 25 years ago. He's
said that he was unbeatable, and I believe him.

I would agree. Without your Pop's efforts, we probably
would not be enjoying most of the games that we have today.
Pinball surely would have gone away much, much sooner.

(And he's STILL a great player!) :)

He wouldn't rank very highly among the elite players, IMHO.
