I recently installed one of those sub-woofers and wow what a difference. I
could feel the game shake and that gave me an idea.

Although I fix all kinds of arcade games for a living, circuit design is not
one of my specialties. I used the shaker motor and power supply pcb for it from
a Data East Checkpoint. The idea is to hook the shaker motor up to the shields
flashlamps, so that when the Borg or Cardassians fire on the ship, you can feel
the hits. I have designed a circuit that works great, but there is one flaw; if
the fuse for the flashlamp power blows, the shaker motor begins to run
constantly, a backfeed of the flashers trying to gain power I guess.

Here is the basic design that I did, and I ask for any input on how to improve
this circuit:

Tap into 12vdc (motor voltage) onto breadboard;
12vdc to 2 amp fuse;
fuse to 1N4007 diode;
diode (banded side) to 10watt 1 ohm resistor;
resistor to positive side of motor
negative side of motor to emitter of TIP36 transistor
collector of TIP36 to ground
Base of TIP36 to Q34 on driver board (shield flashlamps)
220 ohm 1/4 watt resistor base to emitter of TIP 36

Any and all comments and suggestions are welcome.

Wow, that sounds like an AWESOME idea :) Are these shaker motors still
available from Stern? Or could we use one from a vid?

Just use the one that Williams used in Roadshow. Part Number:

A-19720 High Current Driver Board
A-19169 Shaker Motor Assembly

Thanks for the tip, but I guess you missed my point. I already have this
installed, so I really don't want to spend big bucks for NOS williams parts.
But I will refer to the schematics of the driver pcb to see where I can
improve. I just wanted to build one rather than buy one.

AJ,

Just out of curiosity, if the shaker is triggered by the Shield
lights on the STTNG, what happens during attract mode when the
lights are lit somewhat randomly?

It shakes then too; without a separate software command, you can't have the
motor run unless you piggyback it on to something else. It does not shake as
violently as Roadshow does, rather just a mild trembling.

The shield lights were the obvious choice to me, as the effect happens during
the Borg, Final Frontier, Asteroids, Q and Cardassians, and it seems as though
the ship is being fired upon and you can feel the shields'buckle'. I solved the
original problem of shaking uncontrolled by just switching the motor power to
the 20 vdc flasher supply and now it works perfect. You could disable the after
game light show (or shorten it) to keep it from running then.

Very cool. Any chance you could do a writeup on this? That sounds like a
VERY cool ST:TNG mod :)

Where can we grab these Shaker motors? Forget WMS, there's no chance in
hell they have any left.

I did not get the repsonse to this post like I thought I would. The circuit
board that I made and installation took about 30 minutes and is quite simple.
The tough part is getting the shaker motor. I designed this so that it would
not be a violent as Roadshow is. It is a mild tremor and I think that it is a
great modification. Anyone who has played my game has said the same thing. If
you are interested, e-mail me and I'll send the details.

I'd love to try this. Can you give us a writeup on how it was done?

Hey, did anyone get a response to this post, or am I just an April
