Hello,
I'm having one of those "Windows refuses to shut down problems". If

I try to shut down or reboot, the system hangs at the screen that says
"Please wait while your computer shuts down"; If I try to restart the
computer in MSDOS mode (from Windows), I get a black screen with a
blinking cursor in the upper left corner and it hangs.

I'm running Win95B on a Cyrix 6x86 with 48 megs ram, and a Matrox
Millenium
video card. I've gone through the MS knowledge base and tried
everything relevant, but nothing helped at all.

2 Notes -
- If I start in Safe Mode, the computer shuts down just fine. I
have not been able to determine which driver is causing the problem
though.
- This has been happening consistenly after a fresh installation. I

reinstalled 2 or 3 times, just in case, but it's still the same.

If someone has had a similar problem and has been able to solve it,
please let me know what you did. I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep
up with all the messages in this group, so if you reply, please send an
extra copy to my email address. If someone can help me get to the
bottom of this, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

I had the exact same problem on a Compaq Prolinea. I tried everything I
could think of. Finally I did a flash bios upgrade for another problem and
now shutdown/startup works fine. Maybe worth a try if you machine has a
bios upgrade you can get your hands on.

My 486DX4 was having the same problem. When I go to exit it would lock down
on the last screen. I traced my problem to a file called sbawe.vxb Ver.4. I
had just downloaded the updated sound drivers for my Sound Blaster 32 pnp
card when this started to happen. I changed that driver back to the older
ver.3. And everything starting working just find. C.Labs wasn't any help,
they said I had a resource conflict. That why I got a pnp card so that
Windows would handle all that stuff. Anyway I solved my problem by going to
a Pentium Motherboard. Everything works great now.

SPAM ALERT!!! he's just trying to have you go to the home page of his
consulting company. the "faq" for the shutdown is just a link to microsoft's
page.

the link is fukt up anyway - when you select the "shutdown problem," it brings
you to microsoft's tech page, but the page will be about dialup networking
probs, not shutdown probs.

how lame.
