Quite Roger and very true if you must use the basic "highlight
relevant file-hit delete button or right click then select delete"
method. But years ago and I do not now recall where I saw it I learnt
the short-cut direct file-deletion method.CAUTION only use this if you
are at least 100% certain that you wish to permanently delete the
file(s). What I now usually do to avoid the superfluous and inane
dialog boxes that Roger was ranting on about is:-
1.highlight the relevant file(s)
2.press shift and delete together
the results are not consistant but sometimes it works a treat!!
Talking of ranting I have decided to air a few pet peeves of my own
regarding design and the effect on ease of use etc:-
There are far too many examples of pure poor/ridiculous design
top of my list are numerous examples of bad socket and plug design
The prime example is no doubt on your own computer the USB plug and
socket
the idiot who designed this must have started with a clean sheet of
paper but was probably filled with the desire to cause as much misery
as possible. Why else design the plugs on either end of the cable to
make it as dificult as possible to decide their orientation?? and to
cap it all the majority of PC case designers are in cahouts and
generally locate the sockets on the
back of the case to maximise the difficulty of finding them
preparatory to trying to decide which way up the crazy plug should be.
I have just found that some enlightened case manufactures are now
fitting USB,Firewire and even audio sockets on the front of the case.
I am about to try upgrading my PC and such a sensible arrangement is
high on my list of desirable features
You might like to take a peek at:-
a bad design site:-
http://www.baddesigns.com/examples.html
especially mouse sockets
to that site's list I would also nominate
the horrific UK standard 13 amp 3-pin plug. Faced with the need to
attach it to the three wires the designer no doubt mindful of the
employment of electricians elected to stagger the actual screw blocks
so that it is necessary to cut the three wires individually to
different lengths, thereby ensuring that little old ladies can never
attach a plug themselves!!
And Americans reading this should not be smug but should note that
whoever tried to design the standard US plug carefully omitted to
specify that the contact pins should be strong enough to resist
bending hence very often they have to be hand adjusted before they
will fit the wall socket aperture!!
Another silly anomoly is that US light switches are fitted so that you
have to flick the lever up to turn on the light (the opposite of
British practice).
But what else should one expect of a nation fully fifty percent of
whom are of below average intelligence which just might explain why
they drive on the wrong side of the road:-
"Europeans, like some Americans, drive on the right side of the road,
except in England, where they drive on both sides of the road; Italy,
where they drive on the sidewalk; and France, where if necessary they
will follow you right into the hotel lobby"
A good page of theories on this phenomenon is at:-
http://home.off-road.com/~ozifsja/tech/rhd_lhd.htm
but I still prefer my own explanation at:-
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=7mlvel%24bq6%241%40news7.svr.pol.co.uk
And another gripe Americans think it sensible to print every
denomination of bank notes exactly the same size and colo(u)r (the
Canadians at least use different colours) in contrast the Bank of
England brilliantly uses not only different colours but also different
sizes to aid blind people in telling which value note they are
holding.
Finally I very recently realised that in their infinite wisdom
American phone companies decided to issue cell(mobile)phone numbers
using the area code in which the owner resides so that anyone phoning
such a number has no clue that they are phoning what I believe may
well be a higher cost number (UK mobiles all carry distinguishing
700-series numbers)
I think that is enough food for thought for the moment
And yes overall I am very pleased to be living now in this wonderful
land

In America, the person calling does not pay extra to reach a mobile.
The extra cost (if any) is borne by the mobile phone receiving the call.
Have you guys heard of BPL high speed Internet connection? BPL means
Broadband Power Line. Several energy companies across the USA are in the
process of developing it. Earthlink and AT&T are also involved. Basically,
they are going to put the screws to cable companies who offer high speed
connections, and develop high speed connections through existing power
lines. Some of the bigger cable companies... Time Warner, AOL, Cox and
Comcast are quite PO'd.
It's being tested in several areas.

I can imagine why Cathy is watching this. Being in the far reaches of
northern Maine, well, DSL and broadband cable must be scarce and/or
expensive commodities. Communities such as Cathy's are why BPL has any
legs at all. Electric power lines do reach virtually everywhere, even
where phone and cable lines don't.
However, my own suspicion is that the big players (cable and phone
companies) will figure out something before the power companies and the
Federal Govt get their act together. Well, or not. It may be that the
free market economic drivers pass such rural areas by completely. Simply
because there is no profitable economic model to construct.
Don't know, just guessing. Good luck to all you folks in rural/distant
areas.

As you know, I'm in the commercial archiving business, and BPL was brought
to my attention today at work with the strict orders to keep a lookout new
ads. It gets pretty interesting, almost like a political campaign, because
inevitably, cable, phone and power companies will be putting out new
commercials, badmouthing the other's services.
I'm sure they will find a way to stick it to the people who choose to live
in the boondocks. We just got Road Runner a year or so ago. It will take
another 10 years to get BPL.
Atlanta, Georgia is one of the test markets, Ed. If I remember right, the
are currently doing a trial run in 4000 Atlanta area homes. It's also being
tested in Raleigh, Norfolk, The Lehigh Valley, Upstate NY, parts of
Massachusetts, Virginia and Idaho.

I dunno, I'm in the God-forsaken Ozarks region of God-forsaken Arkansas, and
both cable and DSL are readily available at rates comparable to those found
in civilization. The DSL I use is pretty good, too, 512 kbps down/ 256 up.
Peace,
Jack

They brought Road Runner into the area a couple years ago, but there are
still many people who don't have access to it, because they have not run
cable lines on many of the rural roads. Only people on the main highways,
and people who live within town limits have cable. As far as DSL goes, only
those people who live within a few miles of the local exchange have access
to it.
The cost for Road Runner here in Northern Maine is about 20% higher than
what the average person in Connecticut or New York pays.

I'll trade you, Northern Maine for DSL....btw, Cathy, I've been enjoying
your music on your website immensely.
Peace,

Thanks, Jack. I have a CD coming out in a couple of months, the one that was
recorded at Grant Avenue Studio. I'll soon have song clips from the CD up on
my site, as soon as all the licensing is complete.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my site, and if you want to keep track
of when my new CD will be out, stick your name in my mailing list. I'm too
lazy to send a bunch of newsletters. I only do four or five a year, but I do
plan on announcing the CD on my mailing when it's ready, and have plans to
sell it on my website.

I don't think so. If genius is defined as the upper 1% of the population,
then the midpoint of the distribution is 2.33 standard deviations away
from genius. To pick up 99% of the population, you're going to have
to swing another 2.33 on the other side of the midpoint.
So, 99% of the the citizens are 4.66 sigma away from genius.
Hey Cathy, that's great. I will be looking forward to it!!!!!!!

Do any of you remember which golfer it was explained why (in the 1970's)
US Golfers were so much better than the British Golfers?
The announcers in Britian say "He need to get down in 2 to par" The U.S.
Announcers say "He only needs this 90-foot put for birdie..."
This is not intended to put down or make anyone mad. But it might.
That's life.
So much fun with numbers...
Roger
Ouch. My brain hurts. I try and stay away from that sort of thing now. :)

The law of averages says that it happens once in a while...
I'm concerned about the future on this side of the pond. Why, half of the
children are below median intelligence!

No, sorry, I don't remember who said that. This is called ATTITUDE, and
a winning attitude is just fine, providing one is a good sport and
respects his/her competitors.

I'm no math wiz, but I think that's how you get a median, the other half
being above that line...

Quite an accomplishment, Mark, seeing that there is only one master CD, and
