I recently took a look at http://www.sheet-music.com 's Bach sheet music listing
and saw Viola arrangements of the 6 Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin and the 6
Suites for Solo Cello. I have heard a Viola transcription of the Chromatic Fantasia
on the radio and have seen it on CD somewhere. Does anybody know of any recordings
of the Solo Violin or Cello works arranged for Viola?
Also, why are a Violist's fingers like lightning?

I think Milton Thomas once recorded the Violin Sonatas and Partitas on
the viola.

Duh, because they never hit the same place twice? Duh?

I think Milton Thomas recorded the cello suites up an octave. I heard
the record
sometime around 1965.

Hi! I have a CD of Kazuhide Isomura (violist from the Tokyo String
Quartet) playing Bach's Violin Sonata No.1, Cello Suite No.2, and
Chromatic Fantasy. The label is Musicmasters. I don't know if there
are any CDs of the complete sets or not; haven't seen any. This CD
also has solo pieces by Britten and Reger. (The Reger is a great
piece.)
The violist's sound is a bit crunchy at times, like with some of the
chords in the violin sonata, but I think it's made up for by the
sonority of the viola.

I have an old Turnabout LP that I really love of the Bach cello suite in G minor played on the
lute by Konrad Ragossnig in a transcription by Bach himself, and on the flip side is the 6th
suite played on the Viola Pomposa, which is a five stringed instrument and possibly the
instrument for which the 6th suite was really designed. If I remember correctly the violist was
Ulrich Koch, but I am too lazy to go check right now. If you really must know more about this
recording please email me. BTW, the Ragossnig is one of my all-time favorite performances of
anything.
Lionel Tertis plays the Chaconne from the Partita in D minor, BWV 1004
on Pearl: Gemm CD 9918.
I have a 2-disc set of Milton Katims playing the cello suites, but I
think
this may not be available through regular channels. I seem to remember
that
I bought it through a special offering from the American Viola Society.
If
anyone is interested I can probably find out more about it. On the
discs is
"Pantheon Legends, Limited Edition", and the notes refer to Pantheon
International Recordings. No label number is given.

I remember that the viola transcription of the cromatic fantasia was done
by Zoltan Kodaly (I can't remember the player), but I'm afraid that the
recording you listened by radio han not been reversed on CD.
