Hello everyone!

thankz!

If you have a problem finding an older one, version 6.2 for DOS can
still be purchased from Corel. 6.2 provides all the functionality of 5.1
and more with surprisingly modest bloat. With it comes other Corel WP
for DOS Suite applications like Quattro Pro.

If this is not strictly legal, than it is a bad idea to post
this in a public forum. Live and (hopefully) learn.

I have a question. Why? This whole paranoia about software is
ridiculous. The old Word Perfect company WELCOMED the distribution of
their software and even offered free telephone support to people who
said "I got it from a friend." The new "owner," Corel, just recently
was rescued from bankruptcy, and ANY mention of Word Perfect in any
context would be beneficial to them. The purpose of copyright is a
protection against financial loss -- do you really think this guy who
want an ancient copy of Word Perfect would otherwise pay for it? If he
had a computer worth more than $100, he could install Linux and get the
free whiz-bang version of WP for Linux. As internet users, we know
better than non-internet users that the battle of the Browsers was how
efficiently they could get the software to us for FREE. There is
absolutely no reason whatsoever no to exchange software any way we
please. If the copyright owners object, they can sue a specific
individual for damages. It is that simple. It is not a matter of
justice in the streets. There is no victim. There is no violence. It
you don't believe me, think about the terrible crime that you commit the
next time that you use a copy machine in a library. This whole issue is
so innane, it is embarassaing to the concept of being and American, and
what it represents. This is not a police state, it is the land of the
free, and the land of civil suites. Let me know if you have ever heard
of any ordinary schmuck being sued by a huge corporation for the
"illigal use"of their software. Or copying a song off of a radio
station, or coping a tape off of a CD, or a photocopy of a complete
magazine article, etc. Let's be realistic.

How many times have people with no money, and a broken down old
comp[uter worth $25 (or nothing), asked how to get the thing booted in
dos, and the answer is: sorry, we can't sent you a boot disk image,
that would be illegal." Are we morons? Or might we become more
intelligent, rational, and human?

Absolutely, and very well put. However, not all people have a similar
opinion. I remember being elated at finding a MS-DOS download site.
When someone asked in a newsgroup "Where can I get MS-DOS 6.22?", I
posted the url to the group. I got flames from several people and
even threats from one person. Needless to say, I was indirectly
responsible in getting that poor guy kicked off his web host, because
some idiot appointed himself judge, jury and executioner and made a
big stink to the hosting service. I was also dragged into a huge
drawn-out argument in the newsgroup involving several people and
lasting several weeks. There are tons of ignorant self-indignant
self-righteous self-appointed netcop vigilantes who are fanatic
zealots out to hurt anyone they can because they enjoy it.
Apparently, thay believe they are serving some higher cause,
and are even proud of their actions. As with all fanatics, it
is best to avoid them when and if possible. Stealing is wrong,
but downloading a copy of MS-DOS can hardly be considered
stealing, at least not to anyone capable of thinking for
themselves. But you must realize, most people don't.

Interestingly I just visited the mentioned site and the following
message
has been posted.
Now who`es flexing their muscles ??????.

Due to receiving a very disturbing letter, similar to a cease and
decist letter, all the Operating Systems & Applications have now been
removed from Flashback Abandonware and are not to return. I must say I
am very furious having to do this, but if it means doing it to keep
Flashback up, then so be it.

I'm told that some people respond to only the originator and do not
include the newsgroup. I've also been told that some of them have
been know to use an anonomizer service.

And I can tell you without even asking darkside that the threat came
from Micro$oft. M$ also made bootdisk.com remove the minimal but useful
M$DOS boot disks.

BTW the Flashback Abandonwate sitename has been posted regularly all
over the place for quite some time. And you are completely correct about
how WPCorp regarded "borroware" copies -- as cheap advertising. And it
worked -- these users were so enthusiastic about the product that most
of them eventually BOUGHT an upgrade and became long-term loyal
customers, making WP the market leader of its time. It didn't start
losing market share until some idiot decided to cut tech support to
unregistered copies.

Corel doesn't have any particular twitch about old unsupported stuff
being passed around either. In fact they've made the last Mac version of
WP available as a free download.

Do you understand now why it was a mistake for you to post that
url in a public forum??

It's been posted here before, multiple times, and elsewhere as well.
Hell, *I* originally got it out of a public forum in THIS newsgroup
hierarchy! Can't help it that someone got a wild hair up their ass at
the same moment. BTW I asked DaRkSiDe about it, and our favourite flamer
was indeed the culprit.

Funny how he only posts his legal posturings in these small, relatively
"proper" newgroups, and only picks on abandonware sites that are
actually trying to be *helpful* to people with old hardware. To be
ethically consistent, he really should be concentrating on the rather
extensive warez newsgroups and the big warez sites (oh, maybe it's too
hard to nail 'em in Russia?) Where very shortly someone with the
know-how would retaliate in no uncertain terms, and in those ngs,
experienced hackers are a dime a dozen. Of course it's much *safer* to
do it here, where there's little chance of being repaid in kind.
