After reading more than a week suggestions about which Zarathustra, I
found the Reiner RCA 61709 recorded March 8 1954,in a local store, and
I made the investment.
Then I saw that there are more than one Zarathustra with Reiner, was I
fooled?
C Thomas
No, because Reiner recorded it twice and RCA (the Reissue Corporation of
America) has put out at least 2 CDs of the first version (from 1954).

I hope you bought the "Living Stereo" issue that is coupled with a
fantastic "Ein Heldenleben".
The 1962 recording is quite nice in its own right and is available in
the RCA "Papillion) series (the one with the butterfly on the front).
It doesn't quite measure up to the 1954 rec, but comparison of the
two is quite fascinating.

I seem to recall that the Basic 100 issue has the identical coupling and
timings as the Living Stereo issue. It may well be the same transfer.

I know most listeners prefer Reiner, but I much prefer Karajan. I am
not a Karajan fan, and prefer him for no other work -- he just does it
best. There are many instances of rythms in the piece that are almost
never interpretted properly, making it quite a different, and inferior
piece, and Reiner makes these errors. Comparing to a recording by
Strauss himself, it is clear that Karajan, not Reiner, does it as the
composer wished, and he does sound "more correct" and satisfying.
Listen, and you will be convinced.

Then again, if it was with Reiner, then no matter what it wasn't a "wrong"
one.
Happy listening!

Kempe with Dresden does it better than either of them.

>I believe that the Papillon issue has the Leinsdorf/BSO Heldenleben.
That would be a good coupling ... but the Papillon one which I have has
Leontyne Price singing the 4 Last Songs and some excerpts from Die Frau
Ohne Schatten.
