I started the computer and the message for vmm32.vxd file
missing or corrupted showed up. I read somewhere that I
could extract it from the installation CD, but now my
computer goes into a loop where it starts and then
automatically reboots. I have tried to reinstall the same
version of windows ME and it does not allow me and says
that the actual version cannot be upgraded by the version
I am trying to install. Then I tried to install XP, but
the setup file will not open from DOS. Any ideas? should
I uninstall windows? won't I lose all my files?

The vmm32.vxd file on the WinME CD is just the beginning of a unique
eventual file, created at the original installation on your machine.
Drivers needed by various m/b devices have been incorporated into the
final vmm32.vxd to speed up the boot process. Hopefully, System Restore
can recover a valid copy for you:

MS KB Q279736 - "How to Start the System Restore Tool
From a Command Prompt"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];279736

From a command prompt such as Start | Run, enter the following:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Restore\rstrui.exe /makefirstrestorepoint
Does this kick start System Restore?

If not, consider an "in place" reinstallation of WinME:

"Reinstall WinME over-the-top of the current installation.
You will maintain your current settings.

*Note:I don't recommend reinstalling WinME in normal mode.
Disable any BIOS virus program before you start.
If you have Tweak UI installed, be sure to uncheck "Log on
automatically......" on the Logon tab (if you use it).

Next if you have IE6 installed, you need to remove it.
Read the MSKB articles below.

Reinstall Windows

Next, In Windows, do a search for BASE2.CAB.
-----------------------
BASE2.CAB is usually found in one of two locations on your hard drive.
"C:\Windows\Options\CABS"
"C:\Windows\Options\Install"
-----------------------
If you find it,
then boot into Safe Mode
Goto the Folder where you found BASE2.CAB
and double-click on SETUP.EXE,
or do it from DOS.

Bootup using your "Windows Startup Disk".
Select Minimal (Option 4)
At the DOS prompt
Type the following lines
and press <enter> after each.

C:
CD <Path>
SETUP

<Path> = the path where you found the BASE2.CAB.
such as C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL

If you have the WinME CD,
then you can reinstall Windows in DOS
by going to your CDROM,
and running SETUP.
Bootup using your "Windows Startup Disk",
Select option 1 (Help)

After the reinstall, goto the "Windows Update Setup Files" folder (If
you have one) and run its IE setup program.
And then go online to "Windows Update" site, and get all the other
updates you need.
