I have been getting these files on my desktop and
researched it to the point that I recovered an article
which started with "Mystery solved! it is the result of a
windows update 330994 patch. etc.----The reply suggested
that we should go to an article at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critilcal/33
0994/default.asp to uninstall the patch.
When I did this I got the "This page unavailable" result.

Does anyone have a suggestion of another way to get rid
of the~ (tilde) files? An e-mail response would be
appreciated.

Right click on them and delete.

Asked here, answered here.

It is a well known bug and is a copy of your address book as you can see
if you rename it. Some users of OE have this problem, others don't. You
can delete it, ignore it, or hide it, but it may re-appear when you next
amend/add to your address book.

Here's a link with people asking the same question:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Manager/Operating_Systems/Q_20635656.html

"The ~ file is the backup file for your address book. Do you have Outlook
Express or Outlook? The April patch for Outlook Express Q330994 created this
problem. You can remove this update from the Add/Remove Programs and the
problem will be gone. Or you can live with it and wait for the next Outlook
update, which may get rid of it.

What happens normally is when you update your address book, it is stored in
the address book folder. In the same folder, the backup address file is
updated, for example, user.wab becomes user.wa~ . But the April patch
caused this user.wa~ not to be updated. Instead the backup file ~ is
created on the desktop. If you open it, you may recognize some content of
your address book."

Hi Darknight,
I get the infamous tilde, too, but I don't have the update you mention. Never had it to un-install.

It was also caused by an earlier update and AFAIK there was no uninstall for
that one. My standard blurb on the subject follows.
=============================
Welcome to the tilde club. If you rename that file and give it a wab extension
you will discover, much to your amazement that it is a copy of your Address
Book. Due to a rather minor glitch in a recent update to Outlook Express it is
creating the file in the wrong location and to add insult to injury it is not
even giving it the proper name. The file is created whenever you edit the
Address Book and then close the program you were using (Outlook Express
or any other program that uses your Address Book).
There are three avenues of attack open to you.
1) Delete it (PA Bear says that the ~ should always be killed)
2) Ignore it (not my favorite but it might work for you)
3) R-click the file, choose "Properties" and place a check in "Hidden" then
"Apply". This will only work if your system is not set to show hidden files and
depends entirely on the G (BD) theory that "What you don't see, won't bother
you". It also has the benefit of still keeping a current backup of your Address
Book on the system.
Before you ask: Yes, Microsoft is aware of the problem and they are currently
trying to fit a solution into the schedule.
