In MSCONFIG under the start up section, a program called ctfmon.exe is
executed. Can someone please tell me what this does and if I can disable it
without affecting stability?

Many thanks

Mark.

www.microsoft.com

search for ctfmon.exe

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q282/5/99.ASP

Takes less effort than your post did to find the info.

I posted a fairly complete response on ctfmon.exe last night. Do a search
for my name to find it.

CTFMON.EXE is a service connected with your Creative Labs soundcard.
Can you disable it without affecting stability?.. that depends, do you want
your OS less or more stable?<grin>

I used to have a SBLive card, when Windows 2000 came out they promised us
new drivers that would be compatible with windows 2000. .... time marched
on.... windows XP came out... we were still waiting for the windows 2000
drivers they promised us. They released windows XP drivers. ..... I hear
they worked well with windows 2000, I don't know, I got tired of waiting. I
bought a motherboard with built in sound and my SBLIVE is sitting in the
same drawer with my old Intel Pentium II chip, a bag full of 30 pin memory
modules, and a 3dfx card.... I don't miss it.

If you REALLY want to have fun.... replace the card with something else and
TRY to remove all the drivers left over from the SBLIVE. ...... it's worse
then trying to rid yourself of a virus.

<grin>

actualy ctfmon is part of office xp, it manages alternate input methods like
handwriting and voice, if u dont use these then go to the add/remove
programs for office xp and deselect anything associated with handwriting or
voice, then it should get rid of it, if not just rename it, then diasble it
in msconfig, if u do use alternate input, u just got to live with it.

CTFMON monitors the active windows and provides text input service support
for speech recognition, handwriting recognition,
keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies as
described in http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q282/5/99.ASP.
If you want to disable it, read this KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q278/9/27.ASP that shows
how to remove Speech and Handwriting Recognition, which Microsoft recommends
if you do not intend to use these features. You might also be interested in

I stand corrected, maybe at one time it was provided by Creative Labs, but
you are correct, it's a Microsoft supplied program now. It's probably the
prefix CTF* (most of my Creative Labs drivers started with CT<something>)
that threw me, I apologize for any mis-information.
