Hi folks,

Does anybody know what this message in kern.log means?

eth0: command 0x3002 did not complete! Status=0xffff

It comes up when I try to setup a pppoe connection to my provider.
The interface is a 3c59x.

Any help would be highly appreciated

There's a function in the driver which issues reset commands to the
hardware and then spins, waiting for completion. Usually it takes
a single PCI cycle. In your case it timed out.

It look to me like the NIC is powered down. Could you please
send me a bunch of info:

- Does the interface actually work after this message, or is
it dead?

- If the latter, did you warmboot from another OS?

- Does it help if you add the line

options 3c59x enable_wol=1

to /etc/modules.conf? (This is a misnomer - enable_wol
enables the driver's power management functions).

Thanks.

A ping to the assigned IP address works. But I cannot get a PPPoE
connection.

I've got just Linux. The problem occurs after a warm boot as
it seems. When I do a power-down reset, then I don't get this
message, but I don't get a connection via PPPoE, either.

No, this did not help. I found an old EMail with the suggestion
to add enable_wol=0, but this didn't help, either.

The problem came up this morning (12 hours ago). Before the it was
working, AFAICT.

0x90 -> Transmit underrun. The NIC wasn't able to get data
from main memory fast enough. Across PCI.

I wonder what that error is?

The PCI bus is screwed up. I haven't seen this before.
Is the machine otherwise stable? What's special about bringing
up PPPoE? Have you tested the machine well against other hosts
on the LAN?

Especially interesting is the message about the SCSI. How is this

The eth0 has the address 192.168.1.1 . When I do a ping 192.168.1.2,

PPPoE was not involved in this. It wasn't even started.

Maybe the NIC is broken?

Nope:

Bus 0, device 10, function 0:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec 7899A (rev 1).
IRQ 15.
Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=40.Max Lat=25.
I/O at 0xa000 [0xa0ff].
Non-prefetchable 64 bit memory at 0xd5000000 [0xd5000fff].
Bus 0, device 10, function 1:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec 7899A (#2) (rev 1).
IRQ 9.
Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=40.Max Lat=25.
I/O at 0x9800 [0x98ff].
Non-prefetchable 64 bit memory at 0xd4800000 [0xd4800fff].
Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c900 Combo [Boomerang] (rev 0).
IRQ 10.
Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=3.Max Lat=8.
I/O at 0x9400 [0x943f].

The SCSI controller is an Adaptec 39160, so it allocates 2 IRQs, 2 I/Os,
etc.

I have exactly the same error message when trying to use my Davicom card,
actually an endless number of them. I just don't use that card anymore.
Last kernel I tried was 2.4.8-ac10

Both drivers dmfe and tulip give same error. Network traffic on this
card is extremely slow, otherwise the machine is as solid as a rock
since 2 years. MB Asus P2B-S, PII 300

I already tried enabling X86_UP_IOAPIC (was disabled before),
but that didn't change anything.
