Lets talk about Jon Carmack. Jon is the legendary programmer of such
classic PC games as Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke nukem 3d, Quake 1, 2, and
3, unreal, and the upcoming doom3. Jon has single handedly created the
genre known as the first-person-shooter. He has also popularized the
Direct3d 3d format over Microsoft's competing Opengl format, as well
as caused public interest in 3d cards when he first released
accelerated quake for the s3 virge chipset. Jon carmack has redefined
gaming on PC's.

Now stop for a moment and think… What would have happened if Albert
Einstein had worked creating amazing pinball games instead of creating
the theory of relativity? Humanity would suffer! Jon carmack is
unfortunately doing JUST THIS, using his gifts at computer coding to
create games instead of furthering the knowledge of humanity. Carmack
could have been working for NASA or the US military, but instead he
simply sits around coding violent computer games.

Is this a waste of a special and rare talent? Sadly, the answer is
yes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. Not only is Jon carmack not
contributing to society, he is causing it's downfall. What was the
main reason for the mass murder of dozens of people in columbine?
Doom. It's always the same story… Troubled youth plays doom or quake,
he arms himself to the teeth, he kills his classmates. This has
happened hundreds of times in the US alone. Carmack is not only
wasting his talents and intelligence; he is single-handedly causing
the deaths of many young men and women. How does he sleep at night?

Carmack is a classic example of a very talented and intelligent human
being that is bent on total world destruction. Incredibly, he has made
millions of dollars getting people hooked on psychotic games where
they compete on the internet to see who can dismember the most people.
I believe there is something morally wrong when millions of people
have computerized murder fantasies, and we have Jon Carmack to thank.
Carmack has used his superior intellect to create mayhem in society.
Many people play games such as quake so much that their minds are
permanently warped. A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months
after he lost a ‘death match' and became catatonic.

It is unfortunate that most people do not realize how much this man
has damaged all the things we have worked hard for in America. Jon has
wasted his intelligence, caused the deaths of innocent children, and
warped this country forever. To top it off, he got rich in the process
and is revered by millions of computer users worldwide. Perhaps one
day the US government will see the light and confine Jon Carmack
somewhere with no computers so he can no longer use his intelligence
to wreak havoc on society.

Sincerely,
Stanley Feinbaum

Um, Microsoft created Direct3D, not OpenGL. John Carmack hardly "single-handedly" do anything (no, not even the engines), let alone created the FPS genre.

I do agree with your implied attitude towards mindlessly violent games as a whole: developers need to grow up and mature as a whole.

There's so many errors in that paragraph I'm inclined to believe you're
being facetious. Not knowing for sure though I'll just not touch it.

Instead the military adapts his technology to their needs (research Marine
Doom and Marine Quake) so both the economy and the military
benefit -wonderful!

Hundreds of times? Are you being facetious again, sir? Additionally
blaming Doom et al. for violence in youth is too easy yet invalid. Doom at
its time was amongst one of the best selling PC games ever. If a person
played PC games a few years ago chances were they had or did play Doom.
Projecting the idea that Doom was responsible is just plain silly as their
is no substantial link (look up the Surgeon General's report on PC game
violence, released over a year ago). The majority of these people who
play(ed) Doom are your average law-abiding citizen and not crazed killers.

"A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months
after he lost a 'death match' and became catatonic."

Symptom of Parkinsons Disease. It would be impossible to say simply playing
a game put him in a catatonic state.

Perhaps if Einstein created the first Pong, we wouldn't be living in a
nuclear world. But he did, Carmack makes games and people are still dying of
hunger.

Carmack works for military, creates guidance system for ICBM and wipes out
an entire city. Or he makes video games...where's the evil?

So video games were single-handedly involved in all school shootings and
youth releated violence. They all came from functional, loving homes and
Quake3 was their downfall. Kids didn't pick on them, parents didn't neglect
them, teachers didn't ignore them and none had any symptoms of a sociopath.

I hope this letter was a joke, pulled late on saturday night after a few
beers and some light conversation, because the research sucks and I didn't
see one piece of your rhetoric backed up by any fact, statistic or even
simply explained in depth.

Sincerly,

I am sorry Mr. Feinbaum, you will not be receiving a passing grade for your
inane paper you submitted on John Carmack and his alleged contributions the
the downfall of society. In fact I am recommending that you not be allowed
to graduate with the rest of the class until you are able to submit a paper
that does not give such a new definition to the term "mongoloid reasoning".
In fact, Mr. Feinbaum, I find your so called "composition" to be a complete
waste of the paper it was printed on rendering it fit only for use in the
latrine. Kindly apply yourself when next you take my class, and you will
will take it again, to doing some actual research and then applying the
scientific method to your analysis of said research, instead of your
unfortunate tendency herein scribbling down whatever thoughts pass through
what you have that passes for a brian after spending a weekend huffing
airplane glue because I saw you. I do hope you will take to heart this
little contructive review of your work. Now run along. I am giving some,
err, special help to a young coed in my office next with her pert,
succulent, dripping..oh never mind, get out. (door slams)

Stupid prick! I always hate it when people spout such nonsense! Games don't
make murder, people do that. Furthermore there is not even a hint in research

The problem with Columbine incident was not Doom, but rather a seriously
mentally disturbed teen, that could just have likely been watching the dirty
dozen (the non porn version) and done the same thing.

Parents responsibility, they lacked in it, and should have or be held
responsible for their teens action.

I've read the reports, violent video games promote violence - Only with
people that dont have moral value of some sort, or are mentally disturbed
enough to do such a thing.

I play FPS every now and then, and I guarentee I dont want to go shoot
people at work.

During my youth I played games like Astroids, did I want to go blow up my
school no! I played games that involved shooting every concievable object,
but I didnt open fire at anyone.

It's all about parenting.

Jon has nothing to do with it other than he was involved in some successful
games that mentally disturbed teens played. They certainly didnt get the
idea to shoot their classmates from it, though they may have or are using
that to bolster a defence.

Jesus "Stanley", who cares what Jon-boy does with his time? Are you just
jealous that you can't be that creative?

And your arguement that Doom caused the Columbine "massacre" doesn't hold
water for a second. That tired old arguement has been thoroughly beaten
into submission.

Why don't you spend more time worrying about yourself, your family and
friends, and your god than what a computer programmer chooses to do with his
life!

I have been working on an os for a while, and am now considering going back
to working on a cad program (as my os effort is lagging...). luckily it
should just be a few source mutations to merge my os source into my cad
program...
maybe I should finish the persistent store while I am at it, as just
working on the userspace version should be a lot less of a pain...

John Carmack creates entertainment, and entertainment prevents war.
Since the dawn of civilization, humankind has known nothing but war.
The only reason there weren't any world wars before 1914 is because
transportation and communication technology wasn't good enough to wage
a world war. Then what happened after World War 2? People started
watching TV. After that, no more world wars – and that's no
coincidence. Entertainment and technology have made life more
enjoyable, which makes us less willing to die. What else is so
different about us now, as opposed to 60 years ago? Even if there
wasn't a fear of nuclear power, never again in a million years will
you see Germany invade France, or Japan attack Pearl Harbor for no
good reason.

I really like this part.
You know more acts of inhumanity have been done by religious fanatics than
gaming fanatics. I think you should really look at the underlying traits of the
individual and realize his choice of recreational actives makes little
difference on the acts he commits. Or are you ready to condemn religions as
well? Think about it!

No, it is Jons place in history to be involved with entertainment rather
than more practical applications of his expertise. NASA for instance most
likely already has people of Jon's programming ability on their payrole.

Rediculous claim. Millions of people play the game and don't suddenly decide
to go kill people. The distrubed people who go and kill their fellow humans
are just defective products of society...it can't be blamed on the games
they played.

How are they trying to dismember the most people? If the game was linked to
robots that did actually go and kill their opponents then maybe you could
make this claim, but as it is its not valid. They are just playing at war
online...surely that is much better than them actually being are war killing
real people which people don't do? Its escapism that lets people do things
in a virtual setting that they would never dream of doing in real life for
the sake of experiencing something new.

Evidence that this happened? More likely is that he suffered from some kind
of brain disorder that was affected by flashing patterns that could easily
happen watching TV or something instead.

What a load of crap. You have that backwards. OpenGL is not a MS format,
DirectX is.
And John some time back put his weight behind OpenGL because it was easier
to program in ( and evidence that it was faster, at the time).

You don't know that. There was probably several factors not one.
Only stupid people blame the _ONE_ factor (and then try in their stupidity
to convince others that their _ONE_ factor analysis is correct).

Hmm...ive been playing violent online games for 5 years now and would
like to say that you are rediculous. Almost everyone knows the
diffrence between games and real life. Just becasue so people have had
bad influences by there parents dont mean the games they play are.
Most gamers play for fun and to make new friends. I cant believe a
game that a genious created can be put down so bad, Without him there
would be allot more kids that do other things like drugs. I dont know
how many good friends ive made over the years and have been taught
better than to go steel someones gun and go crazy. Its not the games
its that kill people its the people around them so please dont put
down people that are more skilled than you, your just jelous that the
best game you made was solitare with barney happy looking cards!

Why do you necessarily think that Jon Carmack is on the same level as
Albert Einstein? Also, why do you seem to think that his particular
talents would necessarily transfer well to applications that you would
deem more important to humanity? The man has a talent for coding
games. The same would not necessarily transfer to space program or
military applications, contrary to what you seem to imply.

Yet even though the same games are available all over the world, you
don't hear about these computer games causing epidemics of violence
elsewhere. Do you ever wonder why that might be? Could it be that
the cause of these incidents is not related to the games at all?

>Carmack is not only wasting his talents and intelligence; he is

Yes, because apparently the people who actually *KILLED THEM* had no
choice in the matter--they were automatons who were programmed to kill
by computer games, and as such cannot possibly be held responsible for
their own actions. I'm amazed you can say that with a straight face.

Adolf Hitler.

Osama bin Laden.
John Carmack.

Somehow I just don't think that works.

We had murder fantasies long before computers or Jon Carmack. Nihil

I really think you need to get out more.
All to often some horrible thing happens and we as a society are quick
to blame some media but not ourselves. I truly feel sorry for those
that were killed in that school, but to blame a video game is just
like finding a quick scape goat. Those two boys were feeling alot of
stress and had more problems then you think. They tried to get help
but were ignored by the ones that were supposed to be there for them.
The flags were there but everyone's back was turned. After the fact
everyone wanted to blame something but themselves. Well those kids
played Doom so that had to be it right? Wrong. That game didnt give
them the will to kill. I have played alot of computer games and have
yet to find one more violent then a child's imagination. Ever played
pretend when you were a kid? Children come up with far sicker violent
images in their heads then any game or movie can. Personally I dont
like doom. I think its a pointless game. But blaming it is just as
pointless.
And your little analogy of Albert Einstien needs some work. Albert did
discover great things and thanks to his discoveries we got things like
atom bombs that killed more kids then all the high school shootings
combined. But I dont see you complaining about old Al huh? Thanks to
Albert our war machines grew in power and damage. So you can attribute
alot of what Albert discovered to alot more deaths. Maybe if old Al
sat on his rear and worked on pinball machines then alot of Japanese
kids would have grown up have kids of their own instead of dying of
horrible radiation diseases. And yes even a few American kids might
have known there american soldier fathers that never returned from
countless battles if Albert had thought of a better way to "tilt" a
machine.
Blaming a discovery or a thing is futile. There is no point to it.
Everyone felt D&D was evil and part of the reason a famous serial
killer had a copy of the rule book in his car. He also had a pair of
tennis shoes in his car but I dont see any religious groups picketing
tennis courts do I?
People like you cant admit the fact that humans are flawed and
whenever something bad happens you try to find someTHING to blame
instead of yourself. This is the main problem with our society. You
want to think of humans as benevolent and kind but in facts humans by
our own nature are predators plain and simple. So stop blaming things
and blame people.
Jon Carmak didnt cause that to happen. The only ones to blame are the
two boys and the people that saw they were hurting and did nothing for
them. Blame yourself before you blame someone who had absolutely
nothing to do with it.

Hell yeah - 'John' (learn to spell) could have been a top notch
military programmer on various "invasion of privacy" 'need-to-know'
dark ops! Instead, he merely makes all our children into violents!

And, just think if Einstein hadn't pushed his 'agenda' - we wouldn't
have nuked two Japanese cities, full of women and children, to 'high
hell'! Good thing, we must breed the hate!!!

PS - loved the x-posting (or maybe that's simply a forged header by

It wasn't intended to cause side-splitting guffaws, rather to point out what
should be patently obvious - it's a troll.

Seeing as you fell for it and actually took time to respond to in _detail_,
I can understand how your embarrassment would translate into vindictive for
anyone who would draw attention to your extreme gullibility.

Since I'm an Austrian I'm allowed to buy the original version, but I'm living

I didn't write that HE affects laws but the opinions he expressed because they
are shared by many others, especially politicians who have to win an election
by eradicating the source of all evil, which we by now know. Maybe Gerhard
Schroeder should pass a prohibition for Carmack so that he is not allowed to
enter Germany and Germany will be the only place on earth where true peace
will be (apart from Taliban controlled regions of course).

Don't kid yourself; lawmakers all over the world are starting to get it

I take offence to you claiming my post was a troll. I was simply
trying to bring up some important facts relating to doom and jon
carmack. It is important that these facts be given the proper light
with the quake/doom community.

I find that starting a new topic simply to attack me was done to
incite a flamewar. Please do not use me or references to my posts to
needlessly troll the quake community.

I imagine it was a problem to the poster !

Seeing as I've gotten entangled in this thread :

IMO - Games, movies, etc have little effect on behaviour.
While growing up I was exposed to:
Mother Goose & Fairy tales like
Three little pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.
Cartoons like
Tom & Jerry, The Road Runner etc.
Movies included
Westerns, WW2, Crime, Sci-Fi, etc.

From grade school until I got married, I always had access
to guns & ammo, but inspite of the above, I never went nuts.
As far as I know, nor did any of the kids I grew up with.

IMO the three main causes of the current violence problems:
1: Too many people living too close together
We're tribal & territorial by nature & don't like over crowding
2: News reporting that sensationalizes the violence
This is the most likely source of ideas to copy
3: Bleeding-heart liberals that love to come up with any
"reason" that excuses the action of these ass-holes
Example: the guy that started this stupid thread !

I think I speak for most people when I say that the vast majority of society
are able to differentiate fantasy (video games and computer games) from
reality. Killing a person or creature on a computer screen is a heck of a
lot different than the idea of doing it for real. It's convenient to
condemn the gaming industry for "warping" this country forever and "causing
the deaths of innocent children" when in fact there could - and is - a slew
of other reasons why there is violence in society. Have you ever watched
television? You don't have to look very long before you encounter a show
featuring some sort of violence, yes sometimes with weapons. Also, there
are other factors. Violence and fighting have been around long before the
invention of games and television. I like to think that most parents are
good and responsible parents who teach their kids good values, but there are
always a percentage of people who simply aren't good parents for whatever
reason.

Anyone care to add anything further?

Do you really believe in this crap you're talkin about??? How can u compare
Carmack to Einstein??? Einstein was a great scientist, no doubt, but not all
of his inventions helped mankind. How about Hiroshima, the Cold War, or even
Tschernobyl ???? And U think, if a boy kills 20 peoples in an school
masacre, it's because of Unreal Tournament? CRAP! That's a f@ē!n problem of
our society and not of computer games. They play just a small part in our
downfall! Why are those games so popular? Think about it. Is Bin Laden
playin Wolvenstein 3D in his bunker? Think about it. What about the shotgun
lying downstairs in your cellar? Yeah, guess.

It's pretty clear to me now, if you saw all these movies EXCEPT Mother

I can already see the headlines
"Mother Goose saves hundreds of people!"
"Mother Goose saves war!"

Wow, if he had become a nuclear physicist all those kids would designing
nuclear bombs. Thank God he became a game designer!

If he wanted total world destruction he probably would have thought of a
better way, like starting a global religious war by terrorizing innocent
people across the globe. Wait..... the Arabs and Muslims already thought of
that. Never mind.

My theory (and that of others) is that people love to nitpick and correct
small mistakes people make. You offend some people and make some mistakes in
the process, always a success. I mean, who cares besided mr Carmack and your
local tax collector if it's Jon or John, come on.

Here's my absolute favorite a little while back in alt.religion.kibology
(ah, that's why christian teens is in here).

Holy crap, what planet are you from.

Maybe you are thinking of February 29th for leap year and the 1st of
April as Fools day.

A lot more people replied there, it was good fun!
BTW, don't you think that with all these christian sex scandals that
christian-teens have "a bit of an undertone"?

He didnt code Unreal.

It wasnt Carmack alone. The blood and gore was contributed by a talented
designer named John Romero.

Microsoft is not to "blame" for OpenGL. And GLQuake was the first
accelerated version of Quake.

Special and rare? He is in fact the big cheese in 3D gaming - and thats
about it.

Of course its Doom - not. Its that sick and fucked up society you got there
in the US with its gloryfication of violence, and that isnt just because of
Doom. What about those nifty TV shows? The funny Movies? The low moral
profile?

How do you sleep at night? You blame one man for all the worlds problems
and accuse him of murder. You need help.

You might want to blame his family - they obviously failed raising him

Since you seem to know more then everybody else, maybe you could share the

"direct link between violent games and violent behaviour". I'm looking really

Playing Doom etc. is much less likely to produce killers etc. than
being educated by religious groups - I doubt the men envolved in
9/11 did it because they'd been raised on violent video games !

And how about the Catholics & Protestants in Ireland ?

Excuse me for being an ass for a second when I make a slight correction.
VQuake was the first accelerated version of Quake and it ran on the
Rendition Verite 1000 series of 3D accelerators. GLQuake came a little bit
later. Again, I'm sorry. I don't mean to be rude but just want to point

Yes, you're obviously right. I forgot about that less than useable version
(I wonder why there was a GL patch for Verite cards...), although Carmack
