:> Every now and then I see an online store selling just the disk for Mac
:> OS 9.x (in a sleeve, or some such). Usually it's about $30 cheaper

Apple lets anyone who can get to the iTools web site sign up -- it has
nothing to do with anything in the box. Officially, you have to have
Mac OS 9 or later, but there are instructions floating around for
getting to it via 8 (maybe 8.0, surely for 8.5 and 8.6).
So with OS 9 installed, simply go to Apple's web site and sign up for
your iTools account. That automatically gets you a mac.com email
address using that name, and an iDisk as well. In fact, in Mac OS X,
it's "generally expected" that each user account will have its own
iTools account with its own name.

So, is it legitmate to have more than one iDisk, buy purchasing more
than one MacOS 9 (or by any other method?)

I'm sure Apple's intent was that each user of Mac OS 9 "could get" a
single iTools account. But there's no prohibition against any single
individual getting more than one. I have two. My wife has one. Just
sign up for multiple accounts.
