I have had XP on my PC for well over a year now...I run Outlook Express
version 6. For the past few days when I am in the middle of writing a
note, either a new one, or an answer, I get a notice from XP that "this
program has encountered an error" and will close". It does "apologize for
the inconvenience" but that doesn't help....I have no clue as to why this
happening now...

If anyone has a fix for me, I would appreciate it.

BTW, I use OE v6 on my lap top, WIN 98se and no problems. I might add that
I use Express Assist (a backup program) to keep both computers up to
date....

Thanks,
Elaine

Looks like the same problem I have on my system.
All I have found so far is that the error code is (I believe)
something like 0x00000005 (The last '5' after lots of
zeroes is certain).

I wouldn't be surprised if this problem was introduced
with one of the recent "critical updates", but I really do
not know. However, I am very interested in exchange
of information to get this problem solved.

Interesting! This also just developed for me in the last few days, and
it happens more than once a day. Always when writing a response, it
freezes, gives the error message and then bails. I shall note the mods
affected the next time (it already did it once today).

VERY irritating! And I did do a Windows Update about 3, 4 days ago.

I asked the original question...and this did start a few days ago....and I
did do a critical update as well. A friend suggested "system restore". I
just did that...it is too early to tell, but I will let you know. I rolled
it back to this past weekend...

I have heard that the problem is in mshtml.dll that was updated in one of
the patches and the
workaround is to roll back to the older mshtml.dll.

The older version is saved on your computer. Search for it making sure that
"show hidden files and folders" is turned on in folder properties.

Yes, Bob, I noticed this morning, after OE crashed twice, that Event Viewer
pointed to a fault in mshtml.dll both times. I, too, did the updates a few
days ago. It looks as if the current version of mshtml.dll is 6.0.2800.1141
in the System 32 folder. It appears that the next newest is version
6.0.2800.1126 in the System32/dllcache folder.

Thanks for the heads up about this.

Bruce

Bob, I have restored to the beginning of the weekend...would that in effect
do the same thing? I wonder if Microsoft will "fix" the fix?

Probably restoring did it. The new vesion of mshtml.dll is 6.0.2800.1141
and the older version is .1126
I'm pretty sure MS knows about the problem and "are investigating it".

Thanks for the info. This has been really bugging me.

Now, as I have system restore turned off (and I don't find a dllcache
folder in system32) how might I restore the old file?

TIA

It's a known problem with update 810847; That update installs MSHTML.dll
v1141 which is apparently causing the crashes in Outlook Express.
MS are aware of it and are investigating what the cause is.

Read the thread/subject:
February 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (810847) in the
Outlook Express newsgroup

Also read the "!Heads up" thread in the windows update newsgroup....

In the mean time a work-around to try is to restore or revert back to
MSHTML.dll v1126.
I reverted back to MSHTML.dll v1126 and haven't had any crashes since.

To revert back to v1126, search for all copies of the MSHTML.dll file on
your computer, find v1126 and copy it your system or system32 folder, so
it overwrites the later version (v1141) that this update installed.

Note you cant be running Outlook Express or Internet Explorer when doing
this as they both use that dll file.
As always create a restore point or do a backup *BEFORE* applying
'workarounds' like this.....

FIX (for OE running on XP)
Do a search for MSHTML.dll on your computer, you will find several
copies in various directories. Highlight any copy of the file, (when
found) right click, select properties and check the version.

When you find v1126 just copy it to your windows/system32 folder and
click OK when it warns about overwriting the MSHTML.dll file already
there....

When you have done that:
Restart Outlook Express, select help, about and scroll down to verify
that OE is using MSHTML.dll v1126

Max, thank you...I have saved this note and will deal with it again if I
need too. I did restore twice yesterday, the first time, didn't work so I
went back to mid week, of last week and so far so good. Immediately I was
told that there were updates, I chose not to take them. Do you know which
critical update was responsible? There were 3 and of course right now I
can't find the files again.

I am leaving for 10 days, will have access to this forum on my lap top but
will not be able to mess with the desktop (where the problem is or was)
until I come back.

Thanks again,
Elaine

Cumulative update 810847 first released on 5th Feb is the update that's
causing the error.
It was revised and re-released 12th Feb.

Both releases will cause the problem as both of them have the file
MSHTML.dll v1141 included.
The revision release is to fix other problems caused by this update. MS
have not released a fix for this problem yet.
