Hello,

I used to use the Insert Table icon to drag a table with a
specific number of columns and rows. Now the same icon
directs me to a dialogue box asking me for the number of
rows and columns. This works well for a default table, but
I want the flexibility of dragging rows/columns. I've
tried deleting the icon and recreating it, but it doesn't
help. Any ideas?

Well the Table button on the Standard Toolbar should by default be the
command button you are looking for. If it isn't, then it has been swapped
for one of the other similar Insert Table button.

To get it back, Right-click on any Toolbar and select Customise. Select
AllCommands and then Scroll down the list of commands until you find
TableInsertGeneral. Drag and drop this onto the Standard Toolbar. (drag of
any other Table button at the same time.

It's hard to know how this can happen spontaneously, but it does. I did
something in a document the other day--fumbled clicking on the button and
got the dialog you describe. Now I can't repeat the behavior--I just get the
grid to select from. For a start, if this is Word 2002 (may work the same
way in Word 2000), try deselecting the Insert Table... button on the button
list (click the arrow at the end of the toolbar, choose Add or Remove
Buttons, then Standard). Then select it again. This may fix it.

If not, go to Tools | Customize. With the dialog open, drag the existing
Insert Table button off the toolbar. Then, on the Commands tab of the
Customize dialog, find Insert Table... in the commands list for the Table
category and drag that to the toolbar. Close Customize and try it. If that's
not the right one, go back and try Table Insert. The description for both is
pretty much the same, and I don't remember which one is the right one.

There are three 'insert' table commands: one that opens a dialog to enter
the number for rows and columns, one that has a drop down arrow at its side
for selecting several different table commands and one that allows you to
'drag' the number of columns and rows. The later is the TableInsertGeneral
command. (I was never sure why there are three manifestations of this!)

Yeah, I had a feeling neither of the ones I mentioned was the one I wanted.
Thanks for backstopping me.
