I bought the Home Depot cheapo as recommended by various people. Even
made sure I got the same part - PB9106. In fact I ended up buying two
valves 'cause I screwed the adjustment nut on too tight on one and
found the nut was not solid but had a light metal insert which
separated. Second valve looks very much the same as the first but
with a solid nut on the adjustment valve. I do not get a very fine
adjustment!!

When I took both apart, the valve does not seem to be a needle - or at
least not very slender. Goes from tight off to multiple bubbles per
second with small turn of the handle. I set my regulator to about 1
lb pressure - lowest possible.

Suggestions?

I wouldn't set the regulator to 1 psi with any needle valve. It's unstable
at this pressure. If you can't set it to at least 10 psi for this valve,
it's probably not usable.
