I recently bought the Axim X5, 300 MHz, 32 MB Flash and 32 MB SDRAM.
The device is listing "Total main memory" as 31.55 MB and the "Total storage
card memory" as 5.62MB. The question that I have is on the storage card
memory only being 5.62 MB. Shouldn't it be 32MB?
I contacted Dell on this and they say that it is normal. And they made
reference to the operating system using up this memory. That's quite a
bit..... I don't show anything being installed in the storage card memory.
Anyway, If any of you fellow Axim owners would take a look at your
memory and let me know if yours is giving you the same readings, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Oh yes, the Dell Tech Support for the Axim SUCKS!!!!! OK I feel
better now.....

I have the 64M Axim. When I got to Memory - Storage Card it says my Total
storage card memory is 21.24MB and that 2.92MB is in use.

This is normal, I have the 400 MHz version with the 48 meg ROM, there is
about 21 megs free in built-in storage, the rest of the 48 megs is being
used by the OS + built-in apps such as WMP, Reader, Transcriber, etc.

I have the 400MHz so it's 64MB SDRAM.

Total main memory: 63.45 MB
Total storage card: 21.24 MB

Note that the "Total storage card" number refers to the "built-in storage"
which is only a subset of the total RAM. It has nothing to do with the OS as
that sits in ROM. If you copy or place files/folders in the "built-in
storage" folder, it will count towards that "storage card" total. At least,
that's what's happened with mine. When I have files in the "built-in
storage" folder, they show up in the "storage card" page in the memory
setting.

Sorry you feel that way. I've been completely pleased with them everytime
I've called. When I got my Axim and the 5-way button wasn't working, I
called them and had a replacement the next day.

The built-in storage is ROM? How come when I put files in that folder they
count against the built-in storage total but do not show as being in ROM?

Nevermind. I put a 12 MB file in that folder and it counted against the 21
MB but not at all against the 64 MB RAM. So even though the properties don't
indicate it as being in ROM, I guess it is.

it...

I have a 64 meg CF card, it lists 60.97 meg free. Note that
when you look at memory in settings you have to select the
CF card under the storage card tab to get the correct
figure. Othewise it show 21.24 meg for the built in
storage.

The device I have is the Dell 400/64.

Hi Larry,

I think you are confusing Program memory , storage memory and Storage card
memory...

In the Axim X-5 Basic, you have 32MB of ROM... the OS and its applications,
including those preinstalled by the OEM are in the 32MB ROM but do not
occupy most of it. This is where you get your 5.somethig MB of free Storage
Card space.

The RAM on the other hand will show as 31.something split into two with a
slider switch. This again is separated between storage and program...
Storage is where you store added applications and files while Program is the
RAM needed to as memory cache or buffer and actual memory used to process
given actions.

I hope this helps.

Your PPC has 32MB (or 64MB for the expensive one) of RAM, and I don't think
you are confused about that.

It also has 32MB (or 48MB for the expensive one) of "ROM". That is intended
to contain the OS, which is of course read-only. But the OS only takes 27MB
or so. Dell's "ROM" is actually a cheaper form of writable RAM, so the OS
lets you put files in the unused space, with this caveat: (so I understand)
the memory won't stand too many write cycles (it's up in the thousands
though) so only put files there that you won't be changing a lot. I put
pictures and some music there.

If you look at File Explorer, under My Device, you see files and folders
that are stored in RAM, and a pseudo-folder "Built-in Storage". That's your
"free" 5 or 21MB.

Big advantage: it survives a hard reset. Big concern: what happens to my
files when there is an OS upgrade and WinCE needs more room? Don't know.

And I wish Dell had used different model numbers for the "big" and "small"
X5. It's hard to talk about them.

You'll lose files in that folder. ROM upgrade docs should state this
fact clearly.

They're called Axim X5 Basic and Advanced, respectively.
