Total main memory: 63.45 MB
Total storage card: 21.24 MB
Note that the "Total storage card" number refers to the "built-in storage"
which is only a subset of the total RAM. It has nothing to do with the OS as
that sits in ROM. If you copy or place files/folders in the "built-in
storage" folder, it will count towards that "storage card" total. At least,
that's what's happened with mine. When I have files in the "built-in
storage" folder, they show up in the "storage card" page in the memory
setting.

Sorry you feel that way. I've been completely pleased with them everytime
I've called. When I got my Axim and the 5-way button wasn't working, I
called them and had a replacement the next day.

Why does it suck, they gave you the correct answer, you just didn't like
it...
I have a 64 meg CF card, it lists 60.97 meg free. Note that
when you look at memory in settings you have to select the
CF card under the storage card tab to get the correct
figure. Othewise it show 21.24 meg for the built in
storage.
The device I have is the Dell 400/64.

I think you are confusing Program memory , storage memory and Storage card
memory...
In the Axim X-5 Basic, you have 32MB of ROM... the OS and its applications,
including those preinstalled by the OEM are in the 32MB ROM but do not
occupy most of it. This is where you get your 5.somethig MB of free Storage
Card space.
The RAM on the other hand will show as 31.something split into two with a
slider switch. This again is separated between storage and program...
Storage is where you store added applications and files while Program is the
RAM needed to as memory cache or buffer and actual memory used to process
given actions.
I hope this helps.

Your PPC has 32MB (or 64MB for the expensive one) of RAM, and I don't think
you are confused about that.
It also has 32MB (or 48MB for the expensive one) of "ROM". That is intended
to contain the OS, which is of course read-only. But the OS only takes 27MB
or so. Dell's "ROM" is actually a cheaper form of writable RAM, so the OS
lets you put files in the unused space, with this caveat: (so I understand)
the memory won't stand too many write cycles (it's up in the thousands
though) so only put files there that you won't be changing a lot. I put
pictures and some music there.
If you look at File Explorer, under My Device, you see files and folders
that are stored in RAM, and a pseudo-folder "Built-in Storage". That's your
"free" 5 or 21MB.
Big advantage: it survives a hard reset. Big concern: what happens to my
files when there is an OS upgrade and WinCE needs more room? Don't know.
And I wish Dell had used different model numbers for the "big" and "small"
X5. It's hard to talk about them.

You'll lose files in that folder. ROM upgrade docs should state this
fact clearly.

They're called Axim X5 Basic and Advanced, respectively.
