Many years ago I switched from Multimate Advantage to WordPerfect.
Suddenly I have a need to bring up and print some of the old Multimate
files (some of which were Multimate files prior to Advantage.

I thought that WordPerfect 8.0 would handle the conversion. When I try
to bring up the file, the window insert tells me that it recognizes that
a Multimate file has to be converted, but this particular option is
grayed out, so I can't use it.

I also have Microsoft Word 7.0, and tried to open up the file from it.
It brings up the file, with all kinds of garbage (square boxes, lines
running together, etc.), so this was little help. Microsoft Support told
me that they had a conversion kit that would solve this problem and sent
it to me (at no charge), but it turned out that the kit would only work
with Microsft 6.0 and that they did not have a kit that would work with
7.0.

I reinstalled Multimate Advantage. It enabled me to bring up files, but
not to print them. I think if I got to the threshold of printing I
probably would have been blocked anyhow, since there are no Multimate
drivers for my printer.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions as to how I could make the
conversions desired.

If WPWin8 is anything like WPWin6.1 (and I don't see why not) it will
not have installed all the conversion filters it has available. Try
doing a "custom install" to add the neccesary filters. (In WPWin6.1 you
run the "WPWin 6.1 Setup" icon then press "Install"; "Options";
"Conversions").

Hi Herb,

I don't recall if WordPerfect 8 has the Multimate converter
with it or 'coming soon', but it would be an optional install
item.

Microsoft did not create a 32 bit converter for Multimate, so
Word 6 is the last one, and you're right, it won't work with
Word 7/95 or 97/8.

Try the converters at either www.dataviz.com or www.inso.com

Both Word and WordPerfect do not install all the filters if you select
the default installation. You may find it works fine if you go back
into the setup utility and make sure you install all conversion
filters.

If that does not work, then try opening the file in Multimate, click
on the corner of the window it is running in, choose Edit, Mark. This
will allow you to highlight any or all of the text and copy to the
clipboard. Then paste into a new Word or WordPerfect document. You'll
prolly lose some formatting this way, but it would be better than
trying to sort it out from a bunch of garbage.
