i have given the relevant directories the correct permissions
i've set enable scripts and executables.
i can view all other files (.html, .gif whatever), but NOT .ASP
if i try to view .ASP the browser feeds me a 500 internal server error, and doesnt give any more details.. looking at the logs i get only this piece of info :

The server failed to load application ''.  The error was 'The specified metadata was not found.'

the same error occurs if i use http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost
reinstalling didn't work either.

anyone have any ideas?

I am afraid this isn't the "be-end-all" solution to this problem. I as well
have this situation and after many many hours of research on Technet, I
believe it to be the problem of a Hotfix....which has changed my mime type
.ASP from Active Server Pages...to...ASP auto file ....what the heck is
that?

None of my other servers have .ASP files listed as that, I am reluctant in
removing IIS, as I have Exchange 2000 coupled onto it as well, and we all
know what a big pain it is to remove that...without damaging Exchange.

I agree with the fact that it appears the .ASP engine is damaged and/or
confused...it's not just a "website application" create/remove I am afraid -

Any further comments, appreciated -

This is a bunch of crap!

Upon further investigation....

\\server\exchange works !!! - I guarantee to you it's processing .ASP
\\server\digitaldashboard works!!! - I also guarantee to you it's processing
.ASP
\\server\printers doesn't work.
\\server doesn't work.
\\server\conferencing (exchange conferencing server) doesn't work either.

Event Log States:
DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was
unable to logon .\IWAM_CUBE in order to run the server:

{3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}

Ok, no problem...I've got an account issue...simply reset the password of
the service account and re-apply it to the IIS WWW properties at the top
level, replicating it down to the child level...I've been through all this
before...now.....nothing! it also appears as if something else is
wrong...is it using this service account or not? Strange!

That's a Photoshop file type.
http://www.aspfaq.com/faq/faqShow.asp?fid=33

And that should NOT interfere with the way IIS processes your files
(although installing applications like Photoshop can certainly aid in making
your server an "impure" environment).

You must have at some point... that's the only application I know of that
yanks the .asp extension and calls it "ASP auto file"...

Hi,

I sorted out the problem by doing this.

1. Removed the IIS Server Components 5.0 from windows 2000 pro
2. Rebooted the machine.
3. Apply Windows 2000 Pro SP 1.
4. Add IIS Server 5.0 Components from the windows 2000 pro CD.
5. Reboot the machine
6. Apply Windows 2000 Pro SP1.
7. Restart the machine.

Now asp pages started loading properly.

I don't know what logic behind it. but it works for me.

Hope this will help all.

Regards,
Raam
