Hi,

I just got a Sony Clie T615C and from what I understand it was made to
be compatible with WinXP. However I can't get XP to recognize the
device. After I install the Sony Palm Desktop Software and try to
snyc I get the following error:
Found New Hardware
Sony Handheld
Cannot Install This Hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware"
Sony Handheld
An error occured during the installation of the device
The system cannot find the file specified.
Click finish to close the wizard

I get this over and over. I have tried everything it seems. Went
through all 3 levels of Sony Tech support. I have pointed to the
PalmUsbd.sys file. I don't have the sop1kusb.sys file. I previously
had a Palm Vx and the related software on the computer but have
subsequently removed it. I have removed all references to Palm in the
registry.

In the \windows\setupapi.txt I noted the following:

Please help! Thanks!

I FINALLY FIXED IT!!

Now I got it working with no hitches on my laptop too, running Win98,
so it looks like an XP hitch. But to get it working on my home
machine (XP Pro) this is what I did:
1) Removed Palm and/or Palm Desktop
2) Searched for Sony & Palm directories on C: and removed
3) Removed "palmusbd" files (including backup files)
*4) Opened regedit and removed registry entries with:
handheld
palm
vid_054c&pid_0066
class_ff&subclass_00&prot_00,usb
class_ff&subclass_00,usb
22D349FA-8903-40E8-AF7A-DC3DB1187A22
*This is the step that I think made it work because I tried doing 1-3
many times with no success. Even removing palm & handheld registry
entries didn't fix it. It wasn't until I removed the weird entries
did it work. I think the main one to remove is the "folder" (key)
associated with vid_054c&pid_0066. Keep in mine the weird ones are
protected via XP rights, even as an Admin. So you have to change the
permissions by right clicking on the key and changing permissions to
"Full".

After I did the above the Palm device was recognized immediately but
the Sony Handheld device popped up a dialogue box in order to find the
driver. I chose to have it look for the driver automatically and then
it found the C:\windows\system32\drivers\palmusbd.sys file and used
it. Then it said the device was working properly.

I did a bunch of testing on this issue. I thought it may be the VIA
chipset I'm running, which has USB. But I installed a USB card with a
different chipset (Opti) and had the same issue. I created a separate
partition using System Commander and installed it on a new XP install.
It worked, so I knew it was something screwy with my registry.

Sincerely,
