Gerd Sommerhoff, OBE, who died at Cambridge, 28 April, 2002, was a
teacher, inventor, researcher, philosopher, author, & great-grandson
of the famous German composer Robert Schumann.

Sommerhoff was a former Research Fellow in Systems Theory, University
College London.

His autobiography *Assume Nothing* told of the persecution he endured
as a homosexual German student under the Nazi regime, and of how he
then fled imprisonment.

His book followed the story of his childhood in Germany, the
realisation of his sexuality in an age where tolerance was a rare
commodity, his life in numerous countries, and his work at Oxford, and
in London & Cambridge.

His published works include *Logic of the Living Brain* (1974); *Life,
Brain and Consciousness* (1990); with K. MacDorman *An Account of
consciousness in physical and functional terms: a target for research
in the neurosciences. Integrative Physiology and Behavioral Science*,
(1994).

His funeral takes place at Cambridge Crematorium, 7 May, 2002, at
3p.m.
