Anyone know how to export mail files from OutLook Express
running under Windows95?

I want to export my mail files from Outlook Express (so
that I can move them over to a new computer, running
WindowsXP).

However, when I attempt to do the export I get this error:

The export could not be performed
An error occurred while initializing mapi.

I was using Outlook Express 5.0 on Windows95.
However, I have upgraded to 5.5 to see if that would
help.
It did not help.

I found this error description that matches the error I
get:

See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;EN-US;q179637

It explains that I need to remove OutLook Express as my
default Simple MAPI
client. I did that. But it didn't help. Note: The
problem description is
for OutLook 4.0, but I get the same error with 5.0 and
5.5.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Also, I noticed that OutLook Express is set as my default
News Reader. I thought maybe it would help if I could
undo that also. However, I see no way to do that in
Windows95.
Any one know how to undo OutLook Express as the default
News Reader? Is there some file I can edit to remove it
as the default News Reader?

Is there any other way to get my files over to WindowsXP
besides doing an Export?

Export only works to Outlook or Exchange.

Copy the dbx files to a temp folder on the new computer, say C:\Msgs
From OE on XP, File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6
(yes 6, 5 and 6 are the same).
Import mail from an OE 6 store directory.
Browse to the C:\Msgs folder and click on it, then press OK.
Finish the import.

If you've networked the two computers, it's all the easier.
