Out of curiousity I did some reading and some whois lookups in a search for the
first domain name ever created. Not sure if I've found it yet, but here what I
did find so far:

ARPA created Jan-1-1985

BBN.COM, BERKELEY.EDU, & UCLA.EDU all created Apr-24-1985

This one I find amazing in regard to the fast changing world of the net.
MSU.EDU domain record has not been modified since May-19-1987 (12 years!) and
still works fine.

There may be military domains that are older, but the mil nic doesn't give
creation dates for them.

And the first .COM domain happened when Brian Reid registered DEC.COM;
the whois database is not accurate. It shows that MITRE was first
but Brian has dated mail that shows the registration came before
MITRE's.

He actually receievd the delegation in February '85.

Brian left Dec about a year after Compaq bought it. I quote: "Compaq
didn't get enough money to buy Digital by being innovative". He is now
the lad director for Bell Labs (Lucent) new west coast R&D facility.

Uh, no. MITRE was the first .org registrant. The mitre.com domain is
relatively new.

True. This question was first articulated, that I'm aware, at the
July 97 ITAA conference in Washington DC. The wording of the
quesiton was "what was the first commercial registration"
and mitre.org is not non-commercial.

At any rate, dec.com is still the first in both categories.

We actually registered before Symbolics, but at the time the NIC did
not keep accurate records. I have several piece of mail dated February
and March 1985 that are postmarked dec.com. The "Record created on"
entries were not put into the NIC database until about 1994.
