Cables are pressurized with nitrogen to reduce corrosion and prevent
combustion. They transport it as liquid because they can get more of
it in a tank that way.

If I'm not mistaken, it's used to pressurize important fiber and cable
conduits to keep out the elements. Various alarms go off when the conduits
depressurize, alerting them to a crack/break in the system.

I chatted up a smoking tech today who said that they blow it down the
lines when they get wet, generally from condensation. Works for half a
block or so aparently.

It's a uniquely NYC problem, and we generally keep it under wraps because
the tourists, well, just wouldn't understand.

It has to do with the alligators in the sewers who sometimes get a bit
adventurous and wander out of their normal havens...
