A colleague assures me that it is "Ree-nee Ross-ness." Apparently the
Renee is a nickname from Irene. Any confirmation out there?

It is pronounced "Reenie" like "Queenie"

Why? Because her name is Irene.

I've known Renee, the pride and joy of Vancouver, B.C., for about 12
years. She pronounces it "Ree-nee Roz-ness". And you're right, it's
short for Irene.

right on. the 1st time i saw her name in print it threw me for a loop. i
often hear more "ROZ-ness" rather than "Ross-ness". i think both are
acceptable.

I spoke to Ms. Rosness several years ago after an amazing, outstanding
performance at a club in San Francisco. She assured me that her name is
pronounced "REE-nee ROSS-nuss". I think she is a fabulous musician.

Here's some background on Renee's (my cousin) surname which stems from Røsnes
(Norwegian):

In Norwegian, Røsnes (which becomes Rosnes in English) is usually pronunced in
two ways: Røs-nes or Røss-ness. Each part is either given two "long" or two
"quick" endings. The correct way in Norwegian would be long ending on both
parts, however both ways are often used. The same applies for English. I use
something along the lines of: Roes-nes, my brother however uses something
like: Ross-ness.
Go figure.

On a general note, is anybody aware of any kind of pronunciation
guide for jazz musicians? There are a number of names about which I
don't have a clue, and as an announcer I'd like have a chance of
getting it right. Especially names from different cultures - but as
current example shows, even seemingly obvious ones can surprise you!

If there isn't anything out there... I'm thinking about trying to
start a list or database of some sort, and would like to make it a
common resource (web based?) so that others can contribute.

yes, it is short for Irene. I read it on a Gary Thomas record several
years ago.
