Send an email to Katie Coulson at Travroute software. She's the
product manager for CoPilot. Let her know you think this
functionality is important to you. CoPilot versions before 2001
worked happily with Garmin GPSes. Later versions still contain the
functionality to work with Garmins, they use the same engine as
Travoute's Door-to-Door software, but CoPilot specifically looks for
non-TravRoute GPSes and shuts down if it finds one. Katie tells me
that this is an anti-piracy feature but to me, a legit licensed owner
of CoPilot software, it is a PIA!

After several attempts at hacking various CoPilot versions, some
successful & some not so successful, I gave up and bought a SPIII.

David,

Would it be possible to post some info on how you managed to get coPilot to
work with Garmin, even if it is limited? Here in the UK Compaq have sole
rights to CoPilot & bundle it with the NavMan GPS. They are un willing to
sell a software only version so if you already own a NavMan you have to by
another NavMan from Compaq to be able to use CoPilot.

I'm not sure if your aware if you run CoPilot it displays a message saying
it cannot find the correct GPS hardware, if you just move the error message
off screen (don't press OK ) it will continue to work perfectly..

I must have not been clear, I did not buy CoPilot for just the reason
you stated, Iwould have to buy a second GPS. They make me so mad with
that attitude I purchased Microsoft Streets and Trips.

If I could find a way to make CoPilot work with a different GPS I
would find a Bootleg copy and figure it served them right.

They lost a sale of their software to me because of their pig headed
attitude to force me to also buy a second GPS.

Hi Ace,
I am always amazed at logic such as you present.
1) You do not like the way a product is sold (or perhaps the price).
2) Therefore it is logical (to you) to steal it and use it.

In my opinion, no one has the right to steal anything belonging to
another. Instead, just go and buy your product from a vendor who has
what you want and deals fairly with you and has a price you are willing
to pay.

CoPilot shares it's GPS engine with TravRoute's other product
Door-to-Door. D2D is essentially the same software but without the
voice commands. The shared engine works with a whole load of
different GPSes, basically anything that talks NMEA or Rockwell
Binary. However in CoPilot 2000, TravRoute added an extra routine to
try to determine whether or not the connected GPS is their own GPS or
not. Because the engine is the same, you see CoPilot start up and
work for 10 seconds or so before it puts up the error message and on
some versions, as you've observed, you can move the error message to
one side and the program is still tracking you.

I had some email discussions with the product manager Katie Coulson on
this and she told me that TravRoute do this as an anti-piracy measure.

From a technical perspective how they determine the GPS type is fairly
straightforward. In CP2K the GPS unit is sent the Rockwell command
1012 - Get User-Settings. Garmin (in NMEA mode) GPSes simply don't
respond so after a timeout period CP2K stops with the error message
about only working with CoPilot GPS. Rockwell GPSes (I tested with a
Rand McNally unit) respond but with different settings than the
CoPilot GPS responds with. I captured the data on the serial port
first with a CoPilot GPS attached and then the Rand McNally and
compared the differences. The only difference is word 10 of the
response to the 1012 command. The CoPilot GPS responds with 299 while
the Rand McNally responds with 298.

In CoPilot 2001 it works differently. CP2K1 looks for a Rockwell
proprietary NMEA string, ZCH - Zodiac Channel Status. Garmins do not
send this string so after a minute or two CP2K1 throws up the familiar
message. However, my Rand McNally does generate this string and so
CP2K1 works perfectly with either a CoPilot GPS or a Rand McNally GPS.
I wonder if this is a bug from TravRoute's perspective?

The information contained in the ZCH message can be generated from the
non-proprietary messages GGA, GSA and GSV. Using a PC with 3 comm
ports, a null modem cable and some VB code, I was able to get CP2K1
working with my Garmin but it is a kludge to say the least!

CoPilot 2002 - no idea. I gave up with CoPilot. TravRoute's attitude
stinks. I traded my SP ColorMap for an SPIII and no longer have any
need for CoPilot.

BTW, if you are running CoPilot 2000 you can make it work with any GPS
by adding Testing=1 to CoPilot.Ini under the [Setup] section. This
trick doesn't work with CP2K1.
