Well, after all of our research, it turns out that the suburb of
Christchurch we are moving to doesn't have cable nor ADSL! Drat! So
we have to go with the iHug Ultra. Does anyone have any experience
with it? Is it okay? How's the latency for online gaming?

Thanks!

Was no good for gaming in my experience (mainly QuakeII).
Downloads where ok, but overall I was disappointed as it was patchy at best

Advantages:
Fast downloads and browsing
The only choice for faster speeds in some locations

Disadvantages:
Slow uploads (only standard modem speeds)
Loses connection in bad weather
Too expensive to download several GB per month

Telecoms list to be done in the near future.... drat my wife wont let us
sell up and move.... and satelite not an option for online gaming.... my
advice to Lisa is find another Suburb if its not too late.

Unless they have satellite upload now, upload is limited to 33.6 kpbs,
which may be too slow for some people.

Which suburb? Telstra told me a load of rubbish when I asked if they were
wired in my suburb (the contractors have put the cable junction box right
on the outside wall of my unit)

Hi,
I like in a rural area out side of Pukekohe in Auckland, I use ultra and it
might not be the best for gaming I have had little problems with the
service, allways good speed, and the one time I got my dish out of line, it
was fixed in a few days.

It's more than ok, it's excellent for browsing and downloading up to
about 2 Gb - after that it gets expensive.

It's pretty useless for online gaming if you are playing realtime or
simultaneous turn games - you can get lags for up to 1 second on servers
based in the US ( I used to play Warlords online a lot) and that is
mostly lethal. It's fine for turnbased games.

As for weather, my lmv (lmb?) died recently - that is the receiver in the
dish. An installer (other than the original one) came out and put a new
one in, realigned my dish and actually fixed the fact that it had been
installed wrong in the first place. We had some extremely heavy weather
lately and I didn't lose the satellite at all. Was most impressed.

Unless you MUST play FPS games to stay alive I think it's a good service.

Oh, and make sure your system has a grunty powersupply. I used to have
untold problems until I got a good PSU.

-P.

If they are, it's probably illegal.

Chch has the dubious distinction of being the only city in NZ which
requires licensing for all 2.45GHz linking, thanks to a bylaw which
overrides the 100mW EIRP limit _and_ requires planning permission for
_any_ external antennas.

It's Avondale, or maybe Burwood, depending on who you ask. (right
across the road from the QEII Leisurepark). Telstra couldn't even
find the street... maybe I should call and ask more questions, eh?

I like Paradise Cable connection - but still find 256k very
slow compared to Ihug terrestial.

If you have line of site to Sugarloaf - you'll be able to get
the terrestial link for Ihug Ultra - and it's good, and very
very fast - my best rate when I was on this was 880k sustained.

I miss that speed, I really do. National traffic is free - but
yep, the international limits (before you start paying per meg)
are quite low. (A mate regularly downloads 80/85Gb per month -
well ok.. it's his son, but still - it's good, it's fast).

I would not recommend Ihug Ultra satellite at all - so do check
you have line of site to Sugarloaf, if yer gonna go Ultra, the
terrestial link is the only way to go, IMO.

Look for the big black cables hanging on power poles, or the green box
things on the footpaths outside people's houses.

Of course if it is a new subdivision I guess it won't be wired.

By terrestrial do you mean two way at full speed i.e. not limited to
modem speed uploads?
