Please help!!

I'm running NT4WS (sp6a) on dual-pIII box, plenty of RAM available, over a
LAN behind an ISA firewall.

I pick up three POP accounts as well as the exchange server. One of these
three pop accounts will consistently, on send and receive, bring up an error

"Operation timed out waiting for a response"

throughout a single session of outlook. If I shut down outlook and restart
it, it will choose another account to "pick on".

This all worked perfectly on Outlook 2000, so I'm loath to assume it's a
network/DNS problem.

I use our local SMTP server to send all three accounts' email. The account
which is having trouble with POP will also fail to send, even though it is
using _exactly_ the same settings as the other two inet accounts.

If I telnet directly to port 110 and log in to the failing account I can
list the waiting mail fine, so the server is working perfectly.

If I tell outlook to send-and-receive for only that one account it still
fails, so it can't be anything to do with the number of simultaneous
connections.

I tried installing SP1 (as the MS KB suggested) and SP2 with no luck. I've
checked the files which MS list as being the culprits in the KB article and
they have all been updated correctly.

Note: I was a network admin for 3 years in my previous job and I've been
using the 'net for 10 years, so please don't assume I've screwed up my
network settings or any other obvious thing - I've -checked- all the obvious
things.

Cheers

Geoff

Weird problem... A couple of points I'd like clarified/ confirmed:

1) This happens to one account at a time, but which account it happens to
changes when you restart Outlook.
2) All your accounts point to the same SMTP server with the same settings,
but the account that is having problems with POP3 is also unable to send via
SMTP.

Could you turn on logging on one of the machines (Tools -> Options ->
Other -> Advanced Options...) and post the log from a failed session? The
log is named OPMLog.log and is in \Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Temp.

First off, thanks Jeff for the reply...

Secondly, sorry if this arrives twice - I tried posting with the log as an
attachment and it hasn't shown up (in 15 minutes), unsure if that's the
fault of my news server, but anyway...

Yes. And not consistently - sometimes (say 1 time in 5) I can run outlook
and all three accounts will work perfectly.

Yes.

Actually in c:\temp, but no matter...

The log is below.

Note: I've trimmed down to the information I'm _assuming_ is related to this
account - what I did was do a full S&R, then see which account failed, then
specifically do a S&R on that one account (so the other accounts wouldn't
get in the way)... this is the section of the log which refers to that
time-span.

As you can see, the whole section from the callback return before "Finding
host" is not there.

[
given that a previous entry lists:
2002.09.13 16:34:35 Callback::ExecuteThread[THIS: 001b1388] (00001000)
returns 00000000
2002.09.13 16:34:35 Callback::LogText[THIS: 001b1388] (flags =
LTF_TRACE, hr = 00000000, code = 00000000,
2002.09.13 16:34:35 "POP3: Finding host")
.....
]

Interestingly, Outlook fails to shut down normally if this problem occurs -
there's still a task in Task Manager which I have to shut down using "End
Task", however on the occasions where all accounts work outlook shuts down
quite happily.

I'm assuming that a thread's being started and not returning correctly - the
particularly pop account has its timeout set to two minutes, which is why
the jump between 16:37:21 and 16:39:21.

If there's anything else I can supply to help diagnose this, just ask :)

Cheers

Geoff
