Folks,

I just upgraded to the latest version of Nero and InCD.
OS is XP Pro with all the latest patches. XP CD writing is turned off.

This version of Nero seems stuffed on my machine - it fails with "Write
failure" error dialogue at then end of the burn process.
Previous version of Nero seemed to work OK, but InCD has never worked. I
cany burn anything now.

The CD writer is the master (and only device) on the 2nd IDE channel - but
for some reason it sets to "PIO mode" depite selecting "DMA if available".
Dont know why....

I dont know if its the PIO mode that is causing Nero to fail, or something
else....

Any ideas whats wrong?

TIA - Adam

Try fixing the PIO/DMA issue:

Double-checking my IDE controller setting,
the DVD-ROM drive was indeed set to PIO mode, with no option to change.

Doing a little research online, apparently this is a known issue with
Windows XP and some CDROM and DVD-ROM drives "losing" their DMA setting
and reverting to PIO mode, with no option to change.

To fix it I did the following:

1. Go into Device Manager, select (in my case) "Secondary IDE Channel",
right click, and "Uninstall.

2. Reboot.

3. IDE channel and associated devices are redetected upon restart.

4. Go back into Device Manager. In the "Advanced" tab, your device will
still probably read as "PIO Mode". Select "DMA if available".

5. Reboot again.

6. Go into Device Manager for a 3rd time to verify that the device is
now set to DMA.

Voila!

Just burned a disc on the fly at 32x with no problems at all.

No clue what causes the drive to lose its identity, but apparently this
can happen sporadically.

How nice.

Thanks for the info.

I did as you suggested and the 2nd IDE channel was reinstalled with DMA
active.
Device Manager now says "Multi-word DMA Mode 2".

I am not sure if this is correct as the ordinary CD-ROM on the 1st IDE
channel says "Ultra DMA mode 2"

Nero burns succesfully sometimes, but mostly fails. Brand new CD-RW.
The burn appears to fail right at the end - error msg in dialogue box says:

"Logical unit not ready, operation in progress", and
"Could not perform EndSession"

The Nero Log file contains the text below - at 17:37:18 it all seems to go
pear-shaped.

Any ideas gratefully received....

Are the cd drives connected to the motherboard ide channel? Is the
motherboard ide controller capable of UDMA? If the cd drives are not on
the motherboard ide channel, but on the hard disk controller, switch
them back to the motherboard. And if that still gives error, swap the
master/slave with cd-rom.
