Hello,

I am new to Linux and I have purchased a book called "Slackware Linux
Unleashed", and it comes with Slackware Linux 3.1 on the CD.

I have seen that 3.4 is the latest version - but if I downloaded 3.4,
would the material in the book (based upon 3.1) still be useable?

Also does anyone know the process of downloading the complete release
of 3.4 and writing it to a CD - do I need to use any specific file
structure so the installation program knows where to find the files?

Hope someone out there can help....

Thanks :)

Yes, for most purposes, the book will be fine for version 3.4. And
I would highly recommend getting the latest version because not only
has the kernel been enhanced, the other software in the distribution
will be newer as well.

This has been answered in the past, but for a small fraction of the
cost of the Official Slackware distribution, you can get a CD from
www.cheapbytes.com that has a snapshot of the official ftp site.

Good luck!

All Linux distributions are very similar in the tools and system utilities
they provide. You'll be able to use the book you mentioned without any
problem at all.

As the matter of fact, you can gain knowledge you seek from most of the
books describing various Unix operating systems, Most of the topics, like
file system organization, mail and mail tools, IP networking, user
accounts, programs like ftp, telnet are essential part of every Unix
system.

You can buy the Slackware 3.4 CD for less than $2 + S&H from linuxmall.com
No matter how experienced in Linux installing you might or might not be,
doing it from CD ROM is much faster and easier.
