This looks like a compatibility problem with Maxtor hard disks. Can anyone help?

Nope, I don't think so. What is your motherboard chipset? The 2.4.18 kernel
doesn't seem to work very well with the intel 845E and 845G chipsets. There
is a patch floating around that fixes this problem(for the 845G at least,
maybe the 845E) for the 2.4.19 kernel but RedHat has not offered it as an
update yet.
I have a Dell 4500 with the 845E chipset and get this error. You will
probably find that you can't put your HD or DVD/CD-ROM into DMA mode and
that your system runs pretty slow because of that.
Try a /sbin/hdparm /dev/hda (or b, c, or d) and see if dma is on.
