This really should have been a new/seperate post/thread,
but since I'm here already... ;-)
The boot vis tool for WinXP is to help sort and optimize the
OS and vendor drivers during the boot up process...quicker boots.
A useful feature of the tool...is that is logs a "time line" of how
long each device/driver takes to load during the system boot up.
So run it in logging mode and reboot...then open and have a
look to see what/where the delay occurs.

If you have a further problem, then please start a new thread.
Then we all can benefit/find the question and solutions.

I wasnt having a problem with the slowdown, but I uninstalled
it anyways. I think I might reinstall it after hearing that
one guy had to reinstall his whole system because it wouldnt
reboot.
I installed this 811493 patch Saturday night and when the system asked
to restart the PC, I let it shutdown, but since it was late, I did not
restart it.
Last night, my son was trying to use my computer and it would NOT
start up. Only the BIOS splash screen would come up.
This morning I tried to start the computer and ran into the same
problem. The PC would not respond to anything; "Ctrl-Alt-Del" would
not work and the power button in the front would nor work either.
Finally I pulled the plug and shut it down.
When I restarted the PC, it took over 10 minutes to boot up. During
this time, I noticed that the light in my CD-RW drive stayed on. The
computer acted as if the hard drive was inop. When the PC finally
booted, I got an error message saying that the CD ROM drive was not
accessible. The CD-RW drive light was still on and I could not open
the CD-RW Drive. The drive would not even show up in Windows Explorer.
I then did a normal shut down and turned everything off. Upon
restarting the PC, everything seemed to work again but everything has
slowed down to a crawl!
I am definitely going to uninstall this patch!
Thanks for the information.

I hope Microsoft is up front about this, I'll stay away from the
update site untill I'm convinced otherwise.
btw: first time here, nice group.
Bob
You are a lifesaver. It worked for me. I was having this problem from last night.
Thanks
I'm running a cheap ECS K7S5A motherboard with an Athlon XP 2000+, 1GB
RAM, and Gainward nVidia GeForce3 Ti200 128MB - and, I haven't seen
any slowdown using WinXP Home SP1. After one poster stated he had to
do a complete re-install after the removal of the patch, I will leave
everything alone! I'll just wait for MS to post the updated patch.
BTW . . . I'm using Grisoft AVG anti-virus software and no slow-down
so far. I guess we all shouldn't be so prudent and timely on keeping
up with the MS updates!

What are the specific symptoms people are having as a result of this
patch? The problem I've been having is that the computer will
actually stall for a moment, almost like the program is frozen, and
then within a minute or 2, it will unlock and things will be fine for
a while again. Is this what's happening to everyone else? I'd
appreciate your input.
Thanks.
2 Questions, how do you uninstall a patch? and does anyone know if
the updated patch issued on 4-25-03 corrects the problem?
Jack
If you are referring to 811493, there is not a different version.
Microsoft moved it from Critical to Recommended.
The web page was updated 25 April to reflect this, the patch is the
same.

You may have to install it again from the Windows Catalog so you can
uninstall it.
Problem is, having inunstalled the problem patch, trying to reinstall
it, the installation of it and all other windows patches now
fails-virus scanner running or not.
Nice going microsoft.
NEW BAD THINGS:
Now when i use the mouse:
Whether I left or right click the mouse on anything, nothing
happens untill I move the trackball a little.
My guess is that this Q811493 'Update' has changed the messaging
routine somehow, so that the mouse click event isn't calling to
update, UNTIL the cursor position is changed,(sending its own update
message).
Any helpfull ideas out there?
Respectfully inquiring

Oh yeah ... it caused an issue alright.
Uninstalled it, and now i can't get to the Windows Update site.
All i get is some message that in order to use update, i need to be running
a Windows OS !!
I am, a broken XP one by all accounts!!!
F*#~ing Microsoft !!
Otherwise:
Post back with the information from step 9 if all else fails.
1. Check Date/Time
2. Disable firewall
3. (Windows XP):
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Don't forget steps 6-9 catroot2 file.
Do this whether SP1 is the issue or not.
4. (Windows XP)
Go to Control Panel.
Click Windows Update on the left panel
5. Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History
6. If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update
7. Set a language in Internet Explorer:
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
(1.) Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
(2.) Click "Languages".
(3.) Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language
Options" dialog box.
8. Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use
automatic configuration script."
To do this:
(1.) Open Internet Explorer.
(2.) Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
(3.) Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
(4.) Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and
"Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.
9. Upgrade to Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 if not already
installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
10. Check the Windows Update Log in the "C:\Windows\Windows
Update.log" for the exact error message.
See if something here fits

I buy a product that costs me well over £100 (uk pounds sterling) which then
goes wrong through no fault of my own, and you get upset when i use an
implied expletive ????
Thanks for the solution ....
[closes jaw, and lowers eyebrows]
I uninstalled the patch with the usual warnings of prog's which may
not work.
My computer is back up to speed with all the mentioned prog's working,
BUT...
There were several other newly created problems with the MS CD Wizard
copying newly 0'd length files to CD. The program just hung.
I discovered the thing about the 0'd length files when I used Sony's
version of their CD/Dvd creator which was polite enought to tell me
why not all of my files were going to be copied and gave me the option
of choosing what I'd like to do.
There were several other minor bugaboos which I've worked around, but
in response to Lucky's possible version problem, I have noticed that
up until 811493 my updated Windows version had been changing through
SP2.xxxxx and after uninstalling it reverted back to SP1.xxxxx.???
I too am puzzled and dissappointed with MS and am one of the newly
created "Slow to Update Windows" people.
I've also heard that temporarily disableing Norton anti-virus, and
then reinstalling the 811493 patch then re-installing NAV has worked
for many, but I'm afraid to quickly jump back in again until I've
heard more...
