ASC Awards
There is just the overall left, and Seema said she had all that handled.
Perhaps he could get out of here early. He turns to sneak out, only
to run into Seema, who appeared to have just come from a knife
fight, or rather from the Infirmary after being in a knife fight.
"You told Gowron that I was the one who decided to put him on stage with
Ambassador Troi, didn't you?" Stephen could only nod yes back at Seema
who can be quite scary when she needs to be. "You're going to do me a
little favor then."
Stephen gulps.
"*Several* favors."
With that, Seema drags Stephen back up the holosuite staging area.
The Awards staff checks their watches. Like any good Awards ceremony,
they are running about three hours late. Some of the authors have passed
out either from exhaustion after two months of wearing their fingers to
the bone voting; others have succombed to a combination of kanar,
springwine, bloodwine and other alcoholic beverages that the Awards
staff has never heard of before.
Many of the guest presentators have long since left the staging area;
there is an incredibly long line for the holodeck and quite a few of the
assembled -- most notably Tom Paris -- are upset that Picard and Crusher
have been in there for *four* hours. The Awards staff have mutually
agreed that *they* personally don't want to know what Picard and Crusher
could do in a holodeck for four hours -- especially after that catfight
between Janeway and Crusher over Picard.
"It could have been worse," Sara says optimistically.
"How *could* it have been worse?" Seema asks. "Seeing two ostensibly
strong, capable, mature, independent women fight over a man is probably
the low point of tonight's festivities."
"Hey, it *could* have been worse. Count your blessings that Kirk only
wanted to play 'The Bachelor.' Imagine if it were 'Joe Millionaire.'"
The Awards staff sits in stunned silence as they contemplate the vision
of Kirk pretending to be a millionaire to woo a galaxy of women.
"I've just done a head count," Rocky reports breathlessly as she runs in
from the main hall. "I can't find anyone to present for the Overall Awards."
Djinn and Seema look at each other; the same problem happened last year.
"Uh oh," Djinn says.
"So who is presenting this one?" Seema asks. She eyes the staff, her
gaze resting on *Stephen*. He owes her *big* time. Stephen cringes in
his chair.
"Um, I'm catching the next transport to Disney, remember?" Sara asks.
"I think I'm going to wash some dishes," Djinn adds. She dangles some
yellow dishwashing gloves and stands up, but a giant Klingon somehow
blocks her escape path.
"Uh, we hired people to do that this year," Seema points out.
Stephen says something about needing to find Marissa before she gets
into any more trouble.
"There are always the Hirogen," Seema says.
Sara's eyes widen. "Anything but that!" She grabs the envelope and runs
down the spiral staircase to the front stage. The orchestra strikes up a
medley of Gilbert and Sullivan tunes and the audience wakes up.
"It's my honor tonight to present the Awards for Best Overall Story. As
you know, this was a test category this year. In the past, there have
been some requests for this category and so this year, the ASC Awards
staff decided to test the category to find out if it was really viable
and whether, when push came to shove, did the newsgroup really want the
category," Sara says. "In third place, we have 'The Lamne'Rau' by Jemima
Pereira."
"In second place, we have 'On the Madhouse Boards' by Lori."
"First place goes to 'Weeds' by Rabble Rouser."
As the applause dies down, Djinn and Stephen hurry to the stage to
present the Wolf and Otter Award for Best New Author before Seema can
book the Borg Collective for the job.
"We are very pleased to recognize a talented group of newbies who posted
their first story to ASC this year," Djinn says.
"We enjoyed your stories this year and we hope you continue to post here
in the future. If you need help or feedback or feel the need to beome
insufficiently reluctant, feel free to ask. We love seeing new faces
around here," Stephen adds. "In addition, we'd like to see you come back
and be eligible for the Alara Rogers Award for Best Author next year."
"And now, without further ado, we present the Awards for Best New
author. In third place, we have an author who wowed the newsgroup with
her lyrical way with words and her ability to show the characters in a
new light," Djinn says. "Kyra Cullinan!"
Stephen takes the envelope from Djinn. "The second place author is
someone who managed to write in several different series, exploring
characters and relationships both. Congratulations to Sara Goose!"
Djinn then stepped up to mike. "This winner of the Wolf and Otter Award
for Best New Author made her strongest impact in Enterprise, though she
made a showing in Voyager and Deep Space Nine as well. Her fics were
angsty, deep, and thought-provoking. We're pleased to present this award
to nostalgia!"
The orchestra was about to strike up the music once again when Stephen
stepped up to the mike and motions to the conductor to cease the music.
"We have an honorary shiny jpeg to present to Tori Morris," Stephen
announces. "Tori Morris provided the Awards staff with a well-needed
giggle. For that reason, we're pleased to acknowlege Tori with her very
own shiny jpeg."
The orchestra strikes up a drum roll as Seema walks across the stage,
trying not to trip over the train of her black diamond-studded evening gown.
"It's my honor tonight as this year's ASC Awards Coordinator to present
the Alara Rogers Award for Best Author. The Award was named after Alara
Rogers, who is original recipient of this Award back in 1996. This year
will mark the eighth time we've given out this Award. As you know, an
author who wins this Award is ineligible to win it again. Winning this
Award is a great honor as there are many talented people who produce
wonderful stories every year on this newsgroup and to be recognized by
this talented group is truly a wonderful reward. The competition this
year was particularly tight and I'd like to congratulate all of the
authors who posted this year to ASC for giving us one of the best fanfic
years yet. Here are this year's winners."
"This year's third place winner managed to juggle both pathos and humor
in her fic. She managed to filk an entire musical as well producing
thoughtful fic. Congratulations to Jemima Pereira!"
"Our second place author managed to have at least one story in every
series this year, demonstrating versality. She wrote both humor and
drama with skill, always managing to keep her characters in character.
Congratulations to Rocky."

Awards year. This author managed several novella length fics as well as
some shorter ones. She has an amazing ability to maneuver between series

The Awards dinner was over and all that was remained was some sweeping
up of confetti. As quietly as possible, the Awards staff slipped out of
Quark's for their next great adventures. Sara was heading towards
Disney, Seema was taking the next shuttle to Cape Code to spend a few
weeks by the ocean to relax. Stephen was on his way to Slovenia and
Djinn was working on setting up arrangements to rent a condo on Ceti
Alpha V. All in all, it was a good year and the staff is looking forward
to finally discovering the cure for Insufficient Reluctance during their
hiatus.

A stunned Djinn is helped onstage by Chapel and Vic. When they get her to
the mike, Vic kisses her cheek and Chapel gives her a hug before leaving her
alone onstage.
"Oh my goodness." It is clear Djinn is very moved. "I don't know what to
say except thank you for this. Thank you for all the great stories that
made me want to write, and thanks for all the encouragement and the
wonderful feedback. Thanks for those on E&B who commented and made the
stories stronger. And thank you to Rabble Rouser and Trekki and Seema, who
took the time to beta my stories this year. I owe you so much!"
Djinn looks around, still a little dazed. "Mostly, I'd like to thank my
muse, who keeps me laughing and going 'no friggin' way' whenever she
suggests some wacky new thing. I hope I never stop listening to her."
Djinn gets emotional, stops talking for a sec. "Lastly, this is for my mom.
She always wanted me to write. I wish she'd lived to read some of my
stuff." Blinking back tears, Djinn smiles. "This is so great. Thank you!"
She smiles again, winks at the audience and makes it halfway off the stage
before she trips. She covers it well though as she exits stage left.

Khan, bearing the scars of many kitchen implements but still unbowed,
victoriously mounts the podium. "Jemima objected to this category as
double-jeopardy, but that was before she received this award. I am
certain that I will be able to convince her of the future utility of
'Best Story' in our plans to take over Trek fando--I mean, its
usefulness to the Awards process. I would like to personally thank all

Jemima, having convinced Khan that his megalomania was not winning her
any fans (except possibly Rocky), joins Seema in person to accept her
final and most surprising award. "I think something has gone wrong,"
she says, glancing around to be sure her overbearing muse was not in
earshot. "Khan must have gotten into the awards account and disabled
the counting safeties. Next time don't listen to him when he says he
just wants to catch up on your technology."
The author brushes nervously at her yellow satin evening gown. "But on
the off-chance this award is legit, I'd like to thank everyone for their
kind comments, and the awards staff for all the work they put in to this
year's extravaganza."
The superior muse draws aside the backstage curtain. "Come," he says,
"I have taken the cookies."
Jemima can't say no to cookies.

In a state of shock, Rocky doesn't move at first and then a smile
spreads across her face as Seema's words sink in. She makes her way to
the podium. She and Seema exchange high fives and then a hug.
"Wow," Rocky says. "This is just incredible. With all the wonderful
authors on the newsgroup, this is an amazing experience. And very
humbling, too, in a way. Thank you very much, all of you, and may we
all have another great year of writing!"

In the audience, Tori sits next to Nostalgia. When the author goes
off to accept her award, and otherwise be shocked, she steals her
Smirnoff Ice and quaffs the rest of it. She wrinkles her nose. "Dude,
Nostalgia, geez. Lay back on the gagh." She moves on to the other
discarded liquids, being very clever in pocketing several wine
samplers for later, and she's moved on to another Smirnoff when they
give her a shiny JPG. She elects to, rather than burning her mouth,
spit it all up all over herself and do a little dance.
Yes, she's had way more than one Smirnoff tonight folks, and it's
really time for some more.

Sara's sitting off-stage, wondering if Hirogen clean-up was included in
their rental contract with Quark when she hears her name being called.
"Yeah?"
"Umm, I think you won an award," Naomi says, the only presenter that had
hung around. "Something about second place in a fox and otter contest?"
Sara face blanks in shock and somehow she manages to get herself on-stage.
Djinn and Stephen point her in the direction of the microphone and she
stares at the bright lights for a moment.
"Umm, to say I'm shocked would really be an understatement. I'm really
touched and amazed at this and I just hope I remember to thank all the
people who need to be thanked. First, to Jerie, for beta-reading. Also, a
big thank-you (and blush) to the people who took the time to comment on my
stories. Thank you, also, to all the wonderful authors out there for being
there and making me see that I wasn't the only one with characters and
stories running around in my head. It's been a crazy but wonderful year and
I'm looking forward to more."
Sara scampers back off stage, eager to get going to Disneyland. At this
point, she's seriously considering throwing in an extended stop at poolboy
central, wherever that may be.
