I have been wondering for a number of years the name of a character in
a Saturday morning TV cartoon of the '80's. To the best of my knowledge
the show was called the Superfriends, however I could be wrong. All I
remember of the guy was that by saying something like "Ill-nick-chuk",
he grew into a super huge, ultimately strong Indian warrior. I got ahold
of a few issues of the comic, it ran for like 45 issues with DC.

Other characters in the show and comic were Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman
and the Wonder twins with their monkey Gleek. If anyone could solve my
dilemna. ie.Just who was that guy and what exactly did he say? I will be
really greatful.

-Thanks in advance, Keith(kbo...@mta.ca)

The name of the character was Apache Chief. As to what he said, I don't
remember, sorry.

It was the Superfriends. He was "Apache Chief". Not tremendously
original in name, but I liked him.

No, that was the arab guy whose lower body became a tornado. At least
I think so. Neither he nor Apache Chief were from the comic books though, were
they? They were like Firestar on the Spiderman and His Amazing Friends show
(even though she's a comic character now in New Warriors(last I checked).)
Verification?

The "something- Nee- Hi-yakoo" (I don't remember exactly what it was,
either, and even if I did, I don't think I could spell it) was said by
Samurai, whose lower body did become a tornado (that's how he flew), and
could also turn invisible. However, if you couldn't guess by the fact
that they called him "Samurai," he was not an Arab, but was, instead, the
token Japanese character. They didn't have a token Arab character.

Apache Chief was the token Native American/American Indian/whatever the
"politically correct" term is character, and grew by saying something
which I always heard as "Ill-ek-trok!" or something like that.

[discussion of various Superfriends cartoon stuff all cut out here]

I've seen this quite a few times, either here or on rec.arts.animation. Could
this stuff be put in a FAQ somewhere? (Probably in rec.arts.animation)

Samurai could fly by turning his lower body into a whirlwind. He
achieved this by saying "kaze no yo ni hiaku" which means "away quickly,
like the wind," or something to that effect. It's Japanese, by the way.

The guy the original poster was thinking of is Apache Chief. "Uttering
the ancient Apache word for big man, Apache Chief grows to the amazing
size of 60 feet!", to quote the narrator on the SuperFriends. The word
was "inek chok". I knew that knowledge would come in handy one day.

Visually, Apache Chief was identical to Scalphunter.

"Een-UK-chuk!"

This boy watches too much TV ...
